Summary

Romanzo, scritto nel 1815, dopo "Orgoglio e pregiudizio" e "Ragione e sentimento", è il primo romanzo in cui l'eroina è bella, ricca e senza impedimenti di sorta (tanto che la Austen disse che quell'eroina non sarebbe piaciuta a nessuno fuorché a lei); per cui non ha necessità di sposarsi per vivere, e pertanto decide di "non sposarsi mai".
Emma però tende a romanzare la realtà che la circonda e il suo interesse romantico si esercita sulle persone che la circondano, cercando di manipolare i sentimenti degli altri per combinare matrimoni. Anche qui, come in "Northanger Abbey" la protagonista deve fare i conti con la realtà, e il suo istruttore sarà un uomo, molto più sensato e di onorevoli sentimenti.

Il perfetto periodare della Austen scorre come uno dei balli dell'epoca, ogni parola al posto giusto, ogni frase al posto giusto, e, come nella società descritta nel romanzo, ognuno con la persona appropriata al suo livello. Dopo due anni dalla pubblicazione di questo romanzo dal finale così "perfetto" da sembrare un sogno impossibile, Jane Austen (l'artista più perfetta delle donne, secondo la Woolf) muore, a 37 anni, nubile, in incerta situazione finanziaria.

Very well read

Emma is one of my favourite Jane Austen books and this one is beautifully read (in Italian) by Silvia Cecchini.

What a wonderful story - and in beautiful language :) I enjoyed every second of it and was curious till the end :)
