Summary

As the shadows lengthen over the June grass, all England is heading for Epsom Downs - high life and low life, society beauties and Whitechapel street girls, bookmakers and gypsies, hawkers and acrobats, punters and thieves. Whole families stream along the Surrey back-roads, towards the greatest race of the year. Hopes are high, nerves are taut, hats are tossed in the air - this is Derby Day.

Enjoyment right to the finish

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen: great storyline and characters that leapt off the page and a compelling narration. If you want to you can guess the outcome early on, but that won't stop your pleasure. Highly recommended.

Absolutely superb -

this is one of the best audiobooks I have listened too! The characterisation, plot and language are all superb and almost indistinguishable form a 'real Victorian novel . . the reader complements this and gives depth and feeling to the characters . I was totally immersed. Really excellent.

I dont usually review but I really want to encourage people to listen to this and share my enjoyment!

Very Hard Going

Any additional comments?

I found this book very hard going in the end I was listening out of a sense of not being beaten.
The only reason I did not return it was the fact Amazon despite their claims ARE clamping down on how many books you can actually return and having already returned four books so far this year I want to keep my credit good.

If you don't want to lets us return books Amazon don't offer us the opportunity! Then ask lots of questions and make your paying customers feel like you are doing us a favour!

What a bore!

I have never abandoned a book before but I was sorely tempted on several occasions with this one. Nothing happened for excruciating long periods, none of the characters were remotely likeable, and in the end I couldn't have cared less what happened. Poor.
