Summary

Vietnam, 1952: Der Reporter Thomas Fowler berichtet für die Londoner "Times" aus Saigon. Das Land steckt in einer schweren politischen Krise: Während der Norden Vietnams zunehmend unter kommunistische Herrschaft gerät und die Truppen der französischen Kolonialmacht zurückgedrängt werden, will die US-Regierung den Süden des Landes durch humanitäre Hilfsprogramme stabilisieren. So lernt Fowler eines Tages den jungen, idealistischen US-Amerikaner Alden Pyle kennen, der im Rahmen eines Hilfsprojektes nach Saigon gekommen ist. Fowler führt Pyle in die Gesellschaft Saigons ein und bald werden die ungleichen Männer Freunde. Doch dann verliebt sich Pyle in Fowlers vietnamesische Geliebte Phuong. Und nicht nur auf privater Ebene tut sich plötzlich ein Graben zwischen Fowler und Pyle auf: Bei seinen Recherchen zu einer Serie blutiger Terroranschläge findet Fowler heraus, dass Pyle nicht der naive Mediziner ist, der er zu sein vorgibt.
