Summary

Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho finds himself the new master of the Argonaute, a French flagship taken in battle. With the Peace of Amiens in ruins, he must leave the safety of Falmouth.

What lies ahead is the grim reality of war at close quarters - where Bolitho will be called upon to anticipate the overall intention of the French fleet. But the battle has also become a personal vendetta between himself and the French admiral who formerly sailed the Argonaute.

Mills and boon for short sighted white blokes

I am very nostalgic for this series having read as a boy but seriously dodgy sexist and racist themes and weurfly homoerotic tone with the most bizarre relationship between a teenage girl and a more than 30yr old bloke with jealousy from a more than 40byr old.

A point of reflection, for Sir Richard

Whilst those of us who enjoy a goodly amount of swashbuckling and cannon fire will enjoy this latest Bolitho book as much as the others, there is a creeping uncertainty in the mind of our hero in this book. Ending the book on a cliffhanger as he leaves the church, I can’t wait to see how he resolves his conflicting loves and loyalties in the next.
