Publisher's Summary

New Orleans is a hot mess.

Ancient feuds. Demonic forces bent on destruction. Oh, and apparently vampires are real.

Della didn't sign up for any of this. She didn't sign up for violence and mayhem in the streets of the Big Easy. She didn't sign up to be a magnet for an evil force intent on hunting down the reincarnated souls of its enemies. She sure as hell didn't sign up for rescue by a sinfully tempting vampire lord and his fashion-model-gorgeous friends. Especially since he seems convinced that she's the living embodiment of his long lost human mate.

Seriously, this kind of stuff isn't supposed to happen to insurance company receptionists from New Jersey. The world is descending into chaos. Now, a coven of hypnotically alluring bloodsuckers is trying to convince her they're the good guys. And the really scary part is, she's starting to believe them.

The Circle of Blood Series

In another lifetime, six vampires lost their mates - and their mortality - to an unimaginable evil power. Now, if they can't reunite with the reincarnated souls of their lost loves soon, it may just mean the end of the world.

From award-winning author R. A. Steffan and fresh new voice Jaelynn Woolf comes a steamy paranormal romance series perfect for adult fans of vampire fiction. Check out Circle of Blood, Book One: Lover's Rebirth today and begin a heart-stopping journey that explores the power of love in a world gone mad with hate.

"Dark, with philosophical traces, Vampire series"

What if Vampires weren't simply the creatures of the night? What if the Big Bang was the rendering of the balance between light and dark and our very existance keeps the two halves separate? What if vampires are the living embodiment of that rendering? In this book there are 6 vampires who were marked for darkness when human but, through great sacrifice from their soulmates, escape it. Now they dwell in the space between. They are the failures of Bael, the demon who wants darkness to reign supreme. More importantly there is a legend that 13 of Bael's failures will one day defeat him and restore balance.

This book is the first in the series. It is quite dark, weighty and violent, with plenty of action and a bit of stage-setting for the remainder of the series. Set in turbulent New Orleans, it shows the dark underbelly of demonic intentions with the undead attacking people, nightly gun violence and so on. Della is a human caught in the crossfire who, it turns out, is a prominent target of Bael. It turns out she has a connection with Trey, the leader of the vampire coven. Trey is unable to resist the call of her soul and repeatedly protects her. Their connection is strong as they figure out what they are to each other and how that is relevant to the legend.

I found this book very interesting. It is quite different from the usual vampire romance. I am looking forward to the remainder of the series. I was a bit iffy about Gwendolyn Druyor's performance to begin with but, as the story progressed, i appreciated how she brought the characters to life with their individual personalities reflected in the narration. She also reflected the darkness and desperation in the story. I enjoyed her performance.

"Vampire Romance. If you're a fan, this is for you."

As a fan of RA Steffan and her go-to narrator Gwendolyn Druyor, I am once again starting a new series, this one a contemporary vampire tale cowritten with Jaelynn Woolf.

The story is set in New Orleans with enough local detail to make your hair frizz from the humidity every time you listen. A coven of six vampires has come to town in an attempt to defeat the demon Baal, and the city is mad with horrible violence erupting at random all over. After a mass shooting, vampire leader Tre meets human Della, who just might be the reincarnation of his lost love Irina and is the key to defeating Baal.

The love story between Tre and Della happens quickly, but it isn’t insta-love. Even with the possibility that she might be reincarnated, Della has some healthy skepticism at first.

For vampire fans, this is both familiar and slightly different. Their abilities include healing, flight as mist, flight as owls, and some mind-reading with other vampires. If you’re already a fan, nothing in the world building will make you stumble.

The writing itself is lovely. There were a few good descriptions and turns of phrase that caught my ear. I was particularly impressed with the writing of the fight scenes and general violence and mayhem. I could feel the reality of the crazy fervor around the characters.

The only time I thought the story lagged was after the first sex scene where Tre is giving Della the backstory on what happened to him. We as readers and listeners already know most of what he’s telling Della. She does need to know what he’s saying, and it should be a scene we witness. I’m not sure what could have been done to make that better. If I’d been reading vs listening, I would have skimmed those scenes.

We got enough of the other vampires to make me curious for the other stories when we get to them. It should be a fun ride no matter how it happens.

As to Druyor’s performance, she is consistent as always. I have listened to enough hours of her performing Steffan’s works that I recognize voices she’s used for other characters in different series. This is a great voice for fiction, and I’d put her in my top ten favorite narrators.

    "Outstanding Vampire Paranormal Romance"

It took me a bit to get sucked into this book but once I did I could not put it down. I enjoy vampire paranormal romances and this book was well written. There is plenty action, some suspense, just the right amount of romance and a great story line.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

The book wraps up nicely and gives you a glimpse of what is to come in book 2. I’m really looking forward to book 2. It’s a great paranormal book. The main characters are interesting and very likable. There are some great secondary characters as well. The story moved at a great pace. If you like vampire paranormal romance you should give this book a try.

    "Could do without the Narrator"
Would you try another book from R. A. Steffan and Jaelynn Woolf and/or Gwendolyn Druyor?

I definitely want to read the series from Steffan and Woolf. I am not sure if I will listen to Druyor again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Zander for his snarky comments and devil may care attitude. He is a good looking Brit and I am very interested in learning about his past and how he was turned.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gwendolyn Druyor’s performances?

Probably not. Her rendition made it difficult to listen to the book. She did a great job with the different voices but she kept the emotion in her voice throughout the entirety of her narration. It became a bit too much.

Could you see Lover's Rebirth being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I could definitely see this made into a TV series. It has all the things that could make it into a hit, but must be on HBO to have all the sexiness in there.

    Any additional comments?

    "Some romance, some gore"

Vampire finds long lost love reborn in a modern day woman. The characters were varied and I found they each had their own charm. The base of this story is fairly good but it didn't really pull me in. There wasn't a lot of excitement or build up while I waited for something to happen. The narrator was very good, giving each character their own voice. I have to admit that for me, the name "Della" for the main non-vampire female character is a bit too close to "Bella". I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

    "Opening scene..."

Audiobook review: A lover lost centuries before is once again found amongst a horrific scene. There is plenty of battles/action and sexual tension as the reunited lovers get to know one another to keep paranormal enthusiasts actively listening. The narrator did a nice job providing the appropriate tone inflections for each scene and providing unique voices. "Decent read and okay narrator.."

Love-sick Tre, and once that started the book went to hell. And Della was an idiot to keep saying she can take care of herself. If authors think that make the heroine strong then they need to read more reviews. She was almost killed twice in as many days and she says she can take care of herself. How stupid can one woman be? I’m glad she got over that attitude real quick. And at about 50% pages and pages of sex, after Della knew Tre for exactly ONE day. Ugh! I don’t mind sex in books but there doesn’t have to be pages and pages and pages and pages of it.

AND, this really didn’t have to be 319 pages. There was too much filler, and the vamps weren’t all that. I mean they could turn into wisps of vapor and into owls but there was no mention of their strength or speed. Maybe I’ll move on to the next book because it only has 211 pages, not really enough to get boring. They do need 13 vamps to defeat Bael the demon but there are only 7 of them in the world so they’ll have “turn” the others, like they did Della, among the next 6 books, I guess.

I don’t know, this could have been much better if the vamps had only been “more”. I did like all the characters: Xander, Eris, Duchess, Oksana and Snag, but there was just something missing. Maybe it was all the page-skipping I had to do, I don’t know.

I’ve already mentioned the sex so I’ll just add that the F-bomb was used 13 times.

As to the narration: One reviewer said, “Gwendolyn Druyor kept the emotion in her voice throughout the entirety of her narration. It became a bit too much,” so I’m assuming the reviewer wanted the reader to sound boring or robotic occasionally. Ummm, no! Gwendolyn Druyor did a good job on the emotions but except for Tre’s voice every other male else sounded kind of girly. Especially Eris. I thought Eris was a girl at first, until he was referred to as “he.” Practice on the men’s voices definitely needs to be done.
