Summary

'This was where her dreams drifted to if she didn't blot her nights out with drink; this was where her thoughts settled if she didn't fill her days with chat. She remembered this tiny, remote foreign village on a molecular level and the sight of it soaked into her like water into sand, because this was where her old life had ended and her new one had begun.'

Portobello - home to the world-famous street market, Notting Hill Carnival and Clem Alderton. She's the queen of the scene, the girl everyone wants to be or be with. But beneath the morning-after makeup, Clem is keeping a secret, and when she goes too far one reckless night she endangers everything - her home, her job and even her adored brother's love.

Portofino - a place of wild beauty and old-school glamour. Clem has been here once before and vowed never to return. But when a handsome stranger asks Clem to restore a neglected villa, it seems like the answer to her problems - if she can just face up to her past.

Claridge's - at Christmas. Clem is back in London working on a special commission for London's grandest hotel. But is this really where her heart lies?

Christmas at Claridge's is a glamorous contemporary romance by the best-selling Karen Swan, author of Christmas in the Snow.

Very misleading title, but a nice book

Nice story, nice narration, but more of a summer beach read than a Christmas one!

Brilliant!

I keep thinking I’ve found the best of Karen Swan but each book I discover just gets better. Christmas at Claridge’s is brilliant !

The twists and turns in this narrative just keep coming - right up until the last. The book is exciting, romantic, clever and the characters so well-developed, I felt they were close friends.

Audible is always my bedtime ‘reading’ but I didn’t get much sleep while listening to this book or much work done during the day, come to that!

Highly recommended !!

Christmas at Claridges

I struggled a bit at times to understand what the business was supposed to be, but I did enjoy it, Barbara

What a misleading title!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Oh, so much, from the title onwards. I'd have called it something like 'Why the Super Rich can never be happy' - though maybe that says more about my life, loves and family and I just don't get it. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that if diamond-studded leather is the epitome of aspirational chic for you, then you'll love this book. Otherwise, not so much. What is isn't about - except in a very minor way - is either Christmas or Claridges.

What could Karen Swan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

See comments about the title above, with maybe a few less coincidences ...though perhaps the overly melodramatic delivery made me more critical than I might otherwise have been...

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Imogen Church?

Someone like Phoebe James, Katie Scarfe or Jane Collingwood, none of whom feel the need to overemphasise quite so much.

Do you think Christmas at Claridge's needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No! Please, no more about such shallow people.

Any additional comments?

Another one where I'm left wondering if a different narrator wouldn't have made all the difference ...except for the title, of course, which I still maintain is all wrong!

Couldn't stop listening

I've read other reviews of the book that say it was a predictable end.... I didn't see it until towards the end. I recently listened to 'players' another of this authors and found it hard to follow.... this was much easier to listen to and follow. These books are chic lit with a bit more depth.

Beautifully written, beautifully narrated

Deserving of more than 5 stars, what a fabulously woven delight this story is. Artfully written with just enough hints, balanced with subtle red herrings to enable realised suspicions to still be a surprise. I lived the life experiences of the characters. Laughing, crying, gasping with them along the journey. An absolute delight of a tale.

Couldn't stop listening

I just loved this book, an amazing story that kept on giving. I love Karen Swan's books and this is now a special favourite Loads of twists and turns. Fun, sadness. I found Clem a great character and willed her to succeed. Yes I know she's not real but the story came to life for me. I like the narrator all in all I would recommend this book

Beautiful story….not just for Christmas.

The narration, by Imogen Church, was, as always brilliant! It really was a lovely story that I didn’t want it to end, but unlike some other books that leave you with loose ends, I liked the way it tied everything up. It really was quite a roller coaster of emotions. Would definitely recommend!
