Audible Editor Reviews

In the third installment of R. L. Mathewson's Neighbor From Hell series, Rory and Connor are childhood nemeses who are thrown together as adults to work on a joint construction project. They still can't stand one another, but their outward animosity covers their mutually undeniable attraction, and it isn't long before their passion consumes them. Fran Jules is impressive in capturing the sizzling chemistry between Rory and Connor, including the various flashbacks where Jules uses perfect childish pitch. Checkmate hinges on this love/hate relationship, and Jules' enthusiastic performance makes it a hilarious and sexy romp.

Publisher's Summary

There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place. As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O’Neil’s bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not…

She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

    Any additional comments?

    With enemies like this, well...
It couldn't have ended in any other way. The twists and turns in their relationship is enough to drive anyone nuts. But to go to hell and back for someone you love? I liked the stubborn pranks as well as the realisation of love.
Another fine addition to the NFH series.

I am new to The Neighbours from Hell series on audio book. I really enjoyed the books & was really surprised at how well they transfer onto audio. I love this story because it is different. No girl meets boy & falls instantly in love. Nope ..this is girl meets boy & hates him. I like Connor as he has hidden depths. Rory is courageous but I am not a big fan of violence & she certainly does a fair amount of kicking. A fun story that I would recommend

" sweet, sexy, lighthearted, just plain funny!"

RL Mathewson gave us another wonderful adventure in the Neighbors from Hell series. Connor O'Neil and Rory James have been torturing each other since preschool. The teasing, pranks and antics did not end as they got older...oh no...both Connor and Rory just got more creative. Bigger and better! Twenty-five years later and their two rival construction companies are competing for the same job. As fate would have it, both companies land the job and they have to work together.  I adored Rory & Conner, they were both sexy and hilarious.  It was a never ending banter between this two who hated each other yet can't live without each other. I loved the chemistry, the humor, the silly escapades, the romantic side of Connor, Rory stubbornness, the smoking smexy times, and the addictive hot cocoa! And despite the craziness of the story, I did love that there was a touch of sweet heart warming backstory. Plus, I was so excited to find out that both Jason and Trevor (from the previous two books in this series) made appearances and they were still up to their food-grabbing antics. Just remember to not take this book seriously, just enjoy the ride!
I am looking forward to Audible releasing more books in Mathewson's A Neighbor from Hell series. These books are a must listen!!

    "Needs a little work"

Interesting concept. Strong build up - I truly believed the characters were out to get each other, but the turn around was a bit quick for as deep as the hatred supposedly ran. The "agreement" to pretend to date was not believable. Enjoyed the narration though. My biggest complaint was the writing - It drives me insane when a sentence has to use the same word two or three times repeatedly when other options are available...he put his hands on the bed and leaned forward on the bed, his arms brushing against the bed...this was a consistent theme throughout the book. Surely someone could have cleaned that up. Also, got tired with overuse of references to "the man." Not "The Man" as in anyone in particular, but whichever guy was being talked about at a given moment in time was referred to as "the man." That got annoying.

    "Annoying and teeth grinding"

I have been trying to stick this story out but it has been difficult. I started skipping chapters at 19 to see if it will get more interesting. Juvenile, no story, just annoying. Be prepared to here redundant statements and words throughout the story. Seriously, the same thing is said in every chapter. Soooo, not hot!

    "The Gloves are off"

And so are the clothes eventually.Nothing wrong with a bit of battle of the wills and competition to make the"fore play "more interesting.I loved the storys between these two close knit families(The Bradfords and the James')they are all strong, handsome, sexually charged and ravenous in more ways than just their stomachs. It's a fun family feud with alot of pranks, jokes, etc.Rory James grew up knowing her rival Connor Oniel. They had and on going war on who could top the other one in pranks, until one day...Connor realized that he loved Rory, but the timimg was too soon, they were too young and he had some making up to do to show her that they can still"play"their little game of war but it wont be as intense and not to hurt her.He wanted her to eventually see him as more than a daily nuisance and for her very big(And I do mean BIG)family...and did I mention protective too..well he wanted them to start seeing him more as some one they could trust, especially with their daughter, niece, sister and cousin. It took some effort and alot of antics and more misunderstandings but, eventually,Connar got the girl of his dreams and got her to understand that she is the only one he wouldn't have a problem, pinching him in the behind with her pliers when she was miffed at him.Great story, funny, full of love and plenty of entertainment.

    Story.... 4.50

Oooh, I think this is one of the best enemies to lovers story that I've ever read. Where the two previous books featured Bradfords and their insane obsession with food, this one featured a Bradford cousin and her insane obsession with getting one over on her mortal enemy, Connor.

These two hate one another...completely and totally. They've spent their lives making the other person's life pure hell. Throughout the story are little snippets of how/why Connor and Rory have gotten jailed, banned, and driven out of places was so funny. I can't imagine how long the author spent thinking up all those crazy scenarios. The book is worth reading for just the length and breadth of hearing about the antics between these two. This story takes the story of the little four year old boy pulling the cute girls pigtails to an extreme.

But they both work construction and in this book they are put to work together on the biggest project either one of them has ever had to work. It will make their careers, but they have to work together and cooperate to make it come together. Most of the town would bet on this being an impossible task. In fact, most of the town will not even let them attend events at the same time because of the destruction they leave in their wake when that happens. I loved the set-up.

And then the story began and I fell completely and totally in love with Connor. Because he is that sweet little four year old. He's always just liked Rory...a lot. He's also done all these incredible sweet things over the years to protect and shield Rory. He wants to take care of her. And Rory has never had that. She grew up in a family of five men...her four brothers and their father. They had NO IDEA what to do with her, so out of self-preservation, she became prickly and hard. Connor is the ONLY person ever in her life who sees her as a girl...and it drives her nuts.

I LOVED this book...so so much! It was just fabulous. So much emotion and the narrator once again NAILED the story and characters to perfection. I highly recommend it!

I love this series. As soon as I finished this one, I immediately got online and bought the next three. If they are near as good as the previous three, I'm going to get a lot of housework done this week (I listen to audiobooks while I do my household chores, so if I'm listening to a good one, I just keep working.)

    "An absolute must read!!!"

Absolutely Loved this story! It's funny as hell, sexy, drama filled, and sweet!!!
You will fall in love with Connor and Rory's story and you just have to love those Bradford & James boys!
Connor and Rory have been each others nemesis since preschool. Pulling all kinds of tricks and stunts to up one on each other, they have landed in trouble and banned from too many places to count.
To make matters worse, they even live next to each other.
Rory is definitely not a girlie girl, having grown up with 5 older brothers and a Mom who left them, she does everything she can to make her Dad proud. Running her own construction company, she is one of the best there is and is about to land the job of her dreams. However, Connor also has his own construction company and bids on the same job as Rory. When the owner decides that he wants both of their companies to work on the project, it will take all the hot cocoa in the state to keep Rory from strangling Connor! It is a wild and fantastically hilarious ride as these two try to work together to get the job done. A definite must read, I freaking loved this book!!!

    Story
    "Love amongst the sociopaths"

I'm going to be charitable and assume this was a first novel. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them. All of her characters, most notably the men, have what could charitably be called an impulse control problem. In this particular novel, however, the main characters are criminally insane. Both commit assaults on each other and ancillary characters with nonchalance and zeal usually reserved for Batman villains. All of this is played for laughs, but the behavior is so over the top that you dislike the characters and start hoping for incarceration rather than romance. As I said, I've read other books by the author and enjoyed them immensely. This one was just off-putting.

The main characters did some really crappy stuff to each other and literally screwed things up for one another. Connor did it because he "loved" her? No. That's not love. You don't harm people you love on purpose. After they got together I was a fan of the book. But not so much their background.
