Editor reviews

Editors Select, October 2017

Andre Aciman's critically acclaimed novel may finally be stepping into modern classic status, having recently emerged from relative obscurity due to the upcoming movie release starring Armie Hammer. And its place in the literary canon is well deserved, depicting perfectly the infatuated experience of first love (I won't say "feeling" because the picture Aciman paints is not a singular "thing" - it's very much a journey through obsession). The story is beautiful, erotic, and feels firmly rooted in human truths (and will make you blush). But what makes it truly worthy of listening to - and why it's my pick for October - is THAT voice. Armie Hammer's narration is among the best I've ever experienced. —Emily, Audible Editor

Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy. André Aciman's critically acclaimed debut novel is a frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human passion.

More praise for Call Me By Your Name:

"Hammer’s soft, velvety voice lends itself perfectly to the story and its Italian setting. While you might think this one isn’t worth a listen if you’ve already seen the movie or read the book, many reviewers say it is still worth taking in even if you know the story - some even say it’s worth listening to more than once." A portal to another dimension

This book is astounding. It has opened my eyes to so much and simultaneously connected me back to my own experience. I had so many ‘aha!’ moments, laughter at Elio’s beautifully articulated inner monologue, which is so real, raw and painful yet invigorating through the intensity, articulated honesty and erupting covert desire. I, also, shed many tears at the torment and torrent of shame and heartbreak which ebbs throughout the book. Armies voice is a dream. Half way through I already planned to re-listen straightaway. This is my all time favourite book. Thank you Mr Aciman and thank you Mr Hammer for conveying this masterpiece with such grace and gravitas. I feel lucky to be alive during a time this literature exists.

The best book I've read all year

I know people like to read the books before watching the films, but with this, I would do it in reverse as to get an idea of the characters and setting. Both book and film are amazing!

Captivating and engrossing

A wonderful story, that locks you into the love developed between 2 people, despite social expectations ever present and how it can evolve and be forever lasting despite time and distance.
Armie Hammer's reading of this, as well as starring in the film, makes this an even more encapsulating listen.

Gorgeous story.

A beautiful and honest love story.
I love that life isn't all happiness, but also that the pots of happy we can dip into throughout our lives.
Armie Hammer does an incredible job bringing the story to life.
I cried at the end.

Delightful

Before I started the audiobook, I picked up the physical copy. I must admit that I struggled. I struggled to relate to the characters, to pull myself through the pages without skipping lines, and to relate to the love they shared together.
The audiobook, however, is perfection. Armie Hammer’s voice is soothing and lyrical to listen to. It brings the story to life, as well as the characters. It made me feel for them and made me long to read more, to continue with the story that I was ready to DNF before. It was fantastic. I finally feel ready to see the film.

A beautiful story, beautifully read.

There’s a wonderful lyrical quality to Andre Aciman’s writing that suits the gentle musical soul of Elio. For those (like me) who came to this book via the film, there’s both a strangeness and a familiarity to it. The story takes a number of different turns, and explores some interesting cul-de-sacs, but at its core the best moments were directly translated to the film - and that’s why it works so well. It’s also why the audio reading by Armie Hammer is so perfectly suited and sympathetic. I’ll be thinking about this for a long time to come, as a touching and beautiful romance of our times.

I cried.

I struggled a bit at the start. It seemed a bit too intelligent...but maybe that's the point. This is not your typical gay trope novel, neither is it a story that you have no experience of. Love, connections, intimacy...wether for a night, a week, a month, a year, or a lifetime, we've all felt it. we understood it. we miss it. Call Me By Your Name examines that love.

The performance by Armie Hammer is first class and gave the story an extra element. His accent had me wishing I could hear more.
