Summary

Sharla-Jean Bromley returns to her hometown after a 17-year absence with vengeance in her heart. From the very beginning, her plans go awry when she meets devastatingly handsome Josh Morgan, the man to whom her father left half of his multi-million dollar lumber mill.

Josh, suspicious of Sharla-Jean’s reasons for returning to town after such a long absence, vows to keep control of the company he feels is rightfully his. She is equally determined to prove she can run her father’s mill, even though it means working side-by-side with Josh, a man whose very presence evokes an attraction that is increasingly difficult for her to ignore.

In the process, they must overcome a villain who’s determined to destroy both the lumber mill and their lives. Will Sharla-Jean succeed and heal the anguish that has long filled her soul? Will she and Josh find the passion of a lifetime?

Kept hoping it would get better

**Spoiler Alert**

This book is weird. The main lead Charlotte is introduced as a formidable woman in full control of her life, who takes no prisoners. But she quickly crumbles into a vulnerable woman who gets talked into doing things she doesn't want to do and is easily manipulated by men. Most of the men in this book come across as extremely abusive with the way they treat her, making it an uncomfortable read. Charlotte has been raped in the past, has PTSD, has had therapy but the rape was not brought up during therapy so she never dealt with it. She is very uncomfortable being alone with men. So it's weird when a male employee turns up unannounced at her cabin when no-one is supposed to know she's there, and lets him in when she is alone & very uncomfortable within his presence. He takes the opportunity to try & rape her but is interrupted. Not only does she not immediately fire him (he is fired by the co-owner), but he feeds her a bunch of lies she does not once question and re-hires him to work with her! That simply doesn't make any sense. A lot of things in this book don't make sense. The male lead Josh one minute dramatically hates her guts & treats her like trash, the next lusts after her & tries to be romantic. His personality switches within seconds, it's like he has a double personality disorder.

There were so many plot holes. Every time a lie or truth is about to naturally come to light with characters simply talking to each other and comparing notes, the author conveniently finds a way to make them avoid each other to string the story along. The storyline is very predictable which was really annoying. Charlotte comes across as extremely clueless, as she takes everything at face value, & never fact checks anything. Josh is also clueless when he ignores obvious fraud and sabotage within his company which is detrimental to the success of his business. Considering his business is his life's motivation, it doesn't make sense that the owner would just turn a blind eye. The bedroom scenes are corny and there was a weird Cinderella ending.

Mystery and romance in a blazing combination!

This book is absolutely filled to the brim with emotion and suspense. Sharla-Jean comes back to her hometown after 17 years for her father's funeral. She inherits 1/2 his business with certain stipulations. And she has to share the experience with Josh, her father's protege. His business and his partner aren't the only things she inherits. There is an arsonist on the loose and all signs might be pointing to Sharla-Jean. She and Josh need to put aside their differences, forgive themselves, unravel the past and work together to solve the mystery before one or both of them die.

The story is a bit long and heavy with detail. That isn't a bad thing, it just is what it is. I enjoyed the audiobook and enjoyed reading how Josh and Sharla-Jean's relationship develops.

Same old same old

This story is almost a rehash of other story lines with changes of name, town, employer and boy. While the story was entertaining it was not original.

Going back to solve a future

Sharla-Jean Bromley returns to her hometown after her father death and met Josh Morgan with whom she will have to run her late father mill for one year.
Sharla-Jean and Josh fight but also cannot stay far way from each other for long. A Love story filled with a a good dose of mystery. But this tense atmosphere between the two of them, in my opinion, sometimes was too much.
I really enjoyed Bill Nevitt narration, he really gives life and texture to the different characters, giving the right pace to the story.

Fun holiday read!

I read this straight after 'Broken Trust' by the same author. Both share some of the same elements - some romance and some suspense.I thought that this one had the edge story wise and so gave it 4 stars for story as against 3 for 'Broken Trust'. There are more twists and turns in this one and the events are well plotted and interesting. The romance is lighthearted and follows the tried and tested theme where they hate each other on sight and then.... well you know the rest! I have to say that the descriptions of her male leads physical attributes are always a bit cheesy but it adds to the fun.

The narrator Bill Nevitt, is one of my favourites. I've been known to choose books solely on the premise that he's the narrator and I'm never disappointed.

I look forward to reading (listening) to more C B Clark in the future.

Enjoyable

A fairly standard romance book. Sharla-Jean's estrangement from her father seems harsh until more of the story is revealed. Her return to her home town following his death and the ensuing story all plays out neatly with no huge surprises. Nevertheless, it's easy listening raised to a higher level due to the stellar narration by Bill Nevitt. This is certainly not the kind of book I would usually listen to, but Mr Nevitt enhances all and every thing to which he lends his considerable voice performing skills. A congenial audio book, which doesn't demand to much of its listener but it's calibre is lifted by excellent narration

Did not disappoint

I loved this book. It’s a story of a wayward daughter coming back to town after the death of her father but the townsfolk all think her father was such an amazing man and she was horrible to run out on him many years before. She knows different and the hurt and anger has not gone away about the past and is made even worse when his will is read. The story shows that not everything is black and white and sometimes forgiveness is the only way to move forward with your life. This book is also narrated by Bill Nevitt so you can’t go wrong there.

A good edge-of-your seat romantic suspense

This reeled me in from the start. A great cast of characters, and the gradual thawing of the animosity between Sharla-Jean and Josh Morgan was well done and the growing relationship between them, after the initial animosity, well drawn.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it held my interest all the way through and I thought the narrator was excellent and put across the various characters well.
