Summary

The ladies of the Maintown, Oregon church are all abuzz when they learn of the new and single circuit-riding preacher that will be coming through town. They all decide to inspire their daughters to make a quilt to welcome him, which soon results in a competition between the girls as each tries to out-sew the other.

But Zach Hartley is unlike any preacher they've ever seen - he's clumsy in the pulpit and does women's work rather than praying over the sick. While this only serves to endear him to most women, Ellie sees something suspicious in his character. Maybe it's his connections to the Portland crime ring and other dangerous thugs?

Where does Bachelor's Puzzle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite high. An unusual story, with lovely people; truly Godly people - probably more so than they realise themselves. They rise to the opportunity to be forgiving and supportive. Good humour, kindness and a good story that I wanted to hear.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was Ellie - kind, thoughtful and considered. Her parents were well portrayed - strong and loving. And one had to feel for Zak throughout the story.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

Not too many overacted character voices - you had to listen to the reading to be sure who was speaking; neither did she overemphasise events in the story. The pace was good and easy to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes - admiration for the townsfolk. Empathy for Zak - he got himself in to a situation which was too big for him. At times it made me both laugh and cry; it made me cross and at times, it made me hold my breath for what would happen next.

Beautiful Story

Loved the history, the love story and most of all the patchwork! The piecing together of scraps of fabric and lives ... Just lovely .
