ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY
Adapted into a major film starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan.
'A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended'
On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house.
Watching her too is Robbie Turner who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever, as Briony commits a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

A beautifully written story
Ian Mc Ewan never disappoints-this is a fantastically written story of disappointed and unfulfilled love, betrayal and lies and the central character coming to terms with who she really is. Much of it is set just prior to and then during ,WW2.
Mcewans imagery is magnificent-there we’re places where I couldn’t bear to listen anymore but also couldn’t stop myself.
I felt torn between absolute hatred of the child Bryony and then abject sympathy for her as she reached adulthood and the enormity of her transgression dawned on her. Compelling reading and very well narrated.

Magnificent!
Atonement is McEwan at the height of his powers and is his best work, by some distance. The story is a deeply moving tragedy arising from the all too credible misjudgment of a young girl with a vivid imagination which rapidly snowballs out of her control. Part 1, particularly, contains some of the best writing in the English language and the narration is absolutely faultless, really bringing this superb work to life.

A beautiful novel.
I have read more than a novel now written by McEwan and I must say that after Enduring Love which still remains my favourite because it made me meet the author for the first time Atonement is the great of his all. A couple of chapters are so intense that you can actually see the characters with your own eyes, neatly, alive.. Some words remain printed on your heart and scenes on your memory.. Great work, a masterpiece.

Best read audiobook I've heard
I've never before bought an audiobook based on the reader but now I'll be looking for what else Carole Boyd has read. Where most know only how to keep a pleasant metronomic rhythm through their narration, she allows the meaning of the words to completely inhabit their delivery. Add to this her ability with accents and voices so full that it wasn't until a third in that I realised I felt like I had been listening to a radio play and had none of the awkward consciousness I usually have of the reader putting on silly voices.
A really gorgeously rendered novel. It manages to have Woolf's introspectively delicate observation of experience whilst remaining somehow gripping throughout.
Can't recommend highly enough.

A sympathetic reading of a masterful novel
This is an excellent reading of Ian McEwan’s masterful novel. I read Atonement when it was first published and have always felt this is the author’s finest work. It was interesting to revisit the story in audiobook form. Carole Boyd gives us a sympathetic reading, bringing the characters to life, and giving their, often painful, emotions and misconceptions a startling reality. Highly recommended.

Not my favourite Ian McEwan
Despite its fame, it’s not my favourite. Still a clever story, deep characters and well written but a bit cheesy at times and too much war-nostalgia for my taste. The reader adds to that by indulging in a bit of a nostalgic tone. Still well worth listening to!
