Summary
Romilly had worked hard for her stunning house in one of Bristol's most fashionable suburbs. She adored her daughter and handsome husband, and sure, life was sometimes exhausting - but nothing that a large glass of wine couldn't fix.
But then, as deep-buried insecurities surfaced, everything started to unravel. A glass of wine became a bottle; one bottle became two. Once, Romilly's family were everything to her. Now, after years of hiding the drinking, she must finally admit that she has found another love....

Lost for words
Just finished this utterly thought provoking and sentimental read. So many memories of my own journey through hell’s corridors to the sunlight and happiness I survive today. I’ll re-read again one day to serve as a reminder how close we come to the ledge, how much we lose but equally how much we gain when we accept and reach out, I heartily ask you to read this if you are still struggling to find acceptance for this hideous disease.

Heart breaking
I found it heartbreaking and well written. I think if you had drinking illness or have had to stop drinking go some reason, you would feel the pain of the main character and the upset it causes to everyone round the person with the illness.

Perceptive telling of a difficult tale.
This is a compelling, insightful story of the awfulness of alcoholism for one family. It neither sugars, nor overdramatises the issues. It does not pull punches, nor fall into cliched romance. It loses a star due to being a little overwritten. One example of this is when the protagonist popped to a shop for some milk and "the coins were nestling in her hand"! There was quite a lot of this. I think I would have found it more off-putting if I had been reading the book. Thankfully, the narrator read in a very straightforward way, such that between us, I found could largely ignore extraneous stuff.

An eye opening journey.
I found it both a compelling but sad story, showing the slippery slope to alcoholism. It flowed well and I could imagine the characters in my head easily as good description throughout. I also found the narration by the author very easy to listen to. Which made it more enjoyable.

Beautiful intelligent mother broken by alcohol
I loved the narration and I’m grateful the author decided to read her book to us, the reader. I found it beautifully written and could easily identify with the cravings she had for a glass of wine, I myself look forward to that at the end of the week. It was brilliantly descriptive, her gradual fall from grace, reaching lower and sadder points of despair, how her insecurities and low self esteem was at the root and how she self medicated herself, her realisation that she didn’t want to give up alcohol to then wanting to. Her husband was hell bent on saving her. Her daughter’s life being impacted. It was tragic and sad, and made me really think about how much of a disease addiction really is. There but for the grace of God go I.
