Summary

On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers with crystal and silver as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect - until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway. Glass shatters. And as the lights go out, people begin to scream....

In the earthquake's aftermath, the lives of four strangers will converge. Sarah Sloane, the beautiful wife of a financial whiz, watches her perfect world fall to pieces. Grammy-winning singer Melanie Free, the event's headliner, comes to a turning point in her life and career. Photographer Everett Carson, a former war correspondent whose personal demons have demoted him to covering society parties, finds new purpose amid the carnage and Sister Maggie Kent, a nun who normally works in jeans and high-tops with the homeless, searches through the rubble - and knows instantly that there is much work to be done.

As the city staggers back to life, a chain reaction of extraordinary events will touch each of the survivors. For Sarah, it begins with the discovery of a crime and a betrayal, then a strength she never knew she had. For Melanie, volunteering at a refugee camp will open new worlds of possibility. And Everett will be shaken by the unlikely relationship he forges with Maggie, who helps him rebuild his shattered life - and upends her own in the process.

But as a year passes, and the anniversary of the earthquake approaches, more surprises are in store - as each discovers the unexpected gifts in a tragedy's wake and the amazing grace of new beginnings.

Disappointing Read

This must be Danielle Steel's worst novel. It's purely black and white and nothing inbetween. Kitschy and sentimental! The narrator's naive rendition doesn't help either.

too nice

The first part of the book was good and the plot seemed interesting. The second half of the book was too "nice" to the point of being predictable and boring. It can be refreshing to have good morals or nice characters in a book, but not at the expense of having a plot. I used enjoy her books, but this is the first one I have read in years, and I doubt I will spend any money on any more of her books.

sorry but narrator boring as well as the story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

very boring story, elaborating more on the married couple rather than the nun and writer,..

Has Amazing Grace turned you off from other books in this genre?

ive returned several of Danielle steel books. this one going back... so I'm switching authors.

Not what I expected.

I have always been a fan of Danielle Steel but this particular book had me struggling to finish. It felt very two dimensional. While the characters seemed "nice", I really never found myself attached or invested.
Additionally, while I find writing this critique difficult, I would be remiss in not mentioning the narrator. He was inconsistent in his voices (sometimes they had accents sometimes not) he also ended most of his sentences in a downward, sad inflection. This trait may have also contributed to the disconnect with the characters.
All this said, this will not deter me from purchasing another Danielle Steel book. As I said, I am a fan.

Great book, terrible narrator

What would have made Amazing Grace better?

A different narrator, sounded like a third grader reading

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He read haltingly, no animation, no emphasis, very deadpan, sounded like a child reading something in class

Any additional comments?

Loved the book, so I powered through, but would never buy another one with this narrator knowingly. He ruined what could have been a wonderful reading.

Not up to Danielle's standards

The story line was ok but I thought the narrator was awful. I normally enjoy Danielle's books but will return this one.
