Publisher's Summary

Leorah Langdon has no patience for Regency society's shallow hypocrisy and unnecessary rules, especially for women. She's determined to defy convention by marrying for grand passion instead of settling for a loveless union like her parents - or wedding a stuffy, pompous gentleman like Edward, the Viscount Withinghall. But when a chance meeting in the countryside leads to Leorah and Withinghall being discovered in his overturned carriage - alone and after dark - the ensuing gossip may force them together.

Withinghall has his reasons for clinging to propriety; his father perished in a duel with his mistress's husband, and Edward must avoid scandal himself if he wants to become prime minister. He certainly has no time for a reckless hoyden like Miss Langdon. But soon the two discover that Withinghall's coach "accident" was no such thing: the vehicle was sabotaged.

Can the culprit be brought to justice? Strong-willed Leorah and duty-driven Withinghall will have to work together if they have any hope of saving her reputation, his political career - and his life.

    "Horrible Edward voice"

Why did the narrator make Edward sound like an 80 year old man! So hard to buy into the love story every time I heard his voice. Otherwise, loved the rest.

"Love the story but the narrator is lacking"
    Any additional comments?

I've read all of Melanie Dickerson's books in both written and audible form and have enjoyed them all. This is the first that I have found where the male lead, Edward, was voiced so annoyingly that it distracted from the story. I did enjoy the story but it would have been so much better and nicer to not have to keep thinking about how much better it would be to have a different narrator - someone like Davina Porter.

    "The narrator's voice was horrible"

The narrator's representation of the masculine Viscount sounded like an old lady! It completely messed up the chemistry!

    "Bad narration"

I did not like the voices. Very disappointed. I listened hoping it would get better. Pass.

    "Sweet story!"

I really enjoyed this book! I did not, however, like the narration of the story.... particularly the way the narrator voiced Edward's character. Though he was only supposed to be 29, she made him sound like he was a stuffy, high-pitch voiced 65-year-old. That being said, I was able to re-imagine his voice. The romance was sweet and relatable, and though a little easy to predict, the storyline was interesting. I would recommend this book if you can read it on Kindle or hard-copy, or if you are willing to use your imagination in changing the way a main character's voice should sound.

    "mildly entertaining"

I appreciate this as a sweet, clean romance. The plot was mildly entertaining but not overly complex and at times quite predictable. The narration left more to be desired. I can't for the life of me understand why the narrator read the hero in such a high and whiney tone, it drove me nuts clear to the end. Nevertheless, it was worth the listen and I'd listen to another by this author.

    "Narration... yuck!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Narrator could have tried to make the dominant male voice not sound like a peevish, snotty, old woman. The male character sounded more like a woman with the voice inflections used or someone who was transgender.

Has A Viscount's Proposal turned you off from other books in this genre?

I usually love these kinds of books, but I wont listen to another with this narrator. It was like listening to nails on a chalkboard when she would start in with Edwards voice... Horrible!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anna Parker-Naples?

Mary Sarah Agliotta is THE BEST narrator I have ever heard, being so talented with MALE and female voices. (spelling?)

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I do love many of Jane Austin's works, and this felt like there were many of the same story lines in the book. It just fell flat for me as far as depth of story and again... Narration was so, so bad.

    "Accents lacking veracity"

I found the vocal characterization of Lord Withinghall very unlikable. He sounds like a crotchety stuffy old man, not someone I want the Leora to fall in love with. The written character of Lord Withinghall is redeemable.

"A long prosy and pious regency romance with audio problems"

I am glad that I listened to this romance novel using Kindle Unlimited. It is not one I would have been happy paying full price for even though it is low priced. This is the first romance I have read/listened to by the author. It is a very prosy romance. With its extensive praise for Hannah Moore and pious evangelical content, it did not appeal to me.

I did listen to the full audio so I gave it three stars. It does have two audio problems. As mentioned by other reviewers, the voice the narrator used for the hero is atrocious. The second audio ptoblem is numerous "skips" in the first half of the audio. If you are old enough to remember vinyl records, you will know what a skip sounds like. If you are not old enough, suffice it to say that skips are what happens when playing a vinyl record that is scratched or if the record player is jostled while a record is being played. It sounds somewhat like stuttering. There were perhaps forty of these skips in the first half. I am wondering if they were caused by reading and listening at the same time or if there truly are digital flaws in the audio file.

Because I actually listened to the entire book despite too much piety and bad audio quality, I am giving this audio/book three stars.

I am definitely not listening to it ever again. I will also not be reading nor listening to anymore books by the author. It is not the type of romance I enjoy. Overly long and way too pious for me.

(There are lines in this book spoken by the "good" characters that are IMHO cringe worthy.)
