Summary

Against the odds, former steel worker Harry Perkins has led the Labour Party to a stunning victory. His manifesto includes the removal of American bases, public control of finance, and the dismantling of media empires.

The Establishment is appalled. Something must be done. As MI5 conspires with the City and the press barons to bring Perkins down, he finds himself caught up in a no-holds-barred battle for survival.

really well read.

the narration was great. The story was enjoyable and I consumed it rather quickly. Honestly I expected more from this story about a transformational government and their ideas, was left wanting more

Depressingly Resonant to current times

Eugh, made me depressed about politics. The story is predictable, and the characters are mostly one note, but the performance of all these different characters is very impressive. Hats off to the narrator.

Gripping. Plausible. Prescient.

Despite having been written over 20yrs ago, this absorbing and unnerving story tells how the establishment protected itself when threatened by a democratically elected government. As such it remains as relevant now as it was then. Excellently read.

ripsnorter but cartoon bad guys

those of a certain age will remember the excellent TV adaptation. the book is slightly more idealistic, and the establishment is painted with no nuance whatsoever, but the story still rips along. the TV adaptation diverges quite a bit, and at the end, totally, from the book. recommended.

Phenomenal.

Gripping from the outset, with narration that captivates the listener and further develops an already awe-inspiring novel. This piece holds such relevance in the political landscape of the early 21th century, and sheds light on the difficulties socialism finds in its battle against the British aristocracy. First class from the start to the end.

What happens when elites club together

This book is a fantastic book and has real resonance for politics today. Imagine if Corbyn was elected PM? I sense that his fate would be similar to that of the main character in this story. A gripping tale.

Annoying accents and delivery

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Alas i wouldnt

What did you like best about this story?

The premise and how history may be copying art in the form of Jeremy Corbyn

How could the performance have been better?

Less bombast - more calm delivery. Did we need accents and stereotyping?

Any additional comments?

I didnt finish listening

Ahead of its time!

What an excellent audio book and ahead of its time by 20 years. Maybe this book is the reason why the majority of MPs are either public school or University bred now, rather than formerly working class or from local constituencies, where they what real people have to suffer and put up with. A great Audible production only made possible by a great narrator and a great author in Chris Mullin. Listen to this book to remind yourself what British politics is really like.
