Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of A Shilling for a Wife by Emma Hornby, read by Penelope Freeman.

Sally Swann thought life couldn't get much worse. Then a single coin changed hands.

A dismal cottage in the heart of Bolton, Lancashire, has been Sally's prison since Joseph Goden 'bought' her from the workhouse as his wife. A drunkard and bully, Joseph rules her with a rod of iron, using fists and threats to keep her in check.

When Sally gives birth, however, she knows she must do anything to save her child from her husband's clutches. She manages to escape and, taking her baby, flees for the belching chimneys of Manchester, in search of her only relative.

But with the threat of discovery by Joseph, who will stop at nothing to find her, Sally must fight with every ounce of strength she has to protect herself and her son and finally be with the man who truly loves her. For a fresh start does not come without a price....

A Shilling for a Wife is powerful, absorbing storytelling that is perfect for fans of sagas by Dilly Court, Rosie Goodwin and Maggie Hope.

Beautiful story

I came across this book after hours of trawling through looking for something new. As soon as I read the description I was hooked. Growing up and still living in Bolton myself I was able to visualise the scenery and It really made me think about this town differently, I now appreciate the history more and am keen to do some research. This book felt quite personal to me. The storyline is beautiful, very dark at times but a reminder of the value friendship holds - and the kindness of strangers. And being able to pick yourself back on and move forward despite the hardships. The narration was brilliant also and I’m usually quite fussy. Thank you Emma for this lovely story. It’s definitely a new favourite of mine. Lizzie (from horwich)

Beautiful story with twists & turns

I've loved this story , I've never listened to a book that's taken me into the lives of those in the story where I can't stop listening (till early hrs). The fight of Sally & hurt she endures is gut wrenching yet the true friends she finds help give her hope. The narrator is fab , bringing people to life & keeping you involved.. I can't wait for more books by this author .

Loved it!

I was a bit doubtful as to whether I would like this, given the violence that is part of the story, but it was a truly great listen. I also got involved with the characters and unlike some stories, I never lost track of one of them. It’s a book you just cannot stop listening to. Excellently narrated by Penelope Freeman and perfectly written by Emma Hornby, thank you I can’t wait to find another!
