Publisher's Summary

For over 40 years, Rose Pepper has kept her own counsel about the story of her past, wanting the truth to stay hidden from her two daughters. But the discovery of some unopened letters threatens to betray all her secrets...

Evacuated to Cornwall during the Second World War, Rose falls in love with a young Czech soldier, stationed at the local US army base, both of them trying to forget that Rose is already engaged to a cold and controlling friend of her family. In the chaotic aftermath of the war, Rose and her lover flee to Prague, only to face a greater danger.

    "Not for me"

I have so far only listened to about an hour of this book, bought because I have listened to another by the same narrator, and thought she was brilliant. The author seems to be trying too hard to be descriptive and emotive and uses phrases like "roses melted into one another like scoops of ice-cream", and a cardigan is 'pistachio-coloured'. I may go back to this book one day, but the more I listened, the more irritated I got with the style of writing and I just wanted the author to get on with the story! I was intrigued by the mystery, and it does have very good reviews elsewhere, so perhaps this one is just not for me.

    "A Season of Leaves"

Excellent written story BUT the narrator ruins the dialogue with her "accent".
The Tjeckoslovakian hero sounds like he has a speech impediment!
    Who thought this sounded good???
