Publisher's Summary

Exclusive to Audio! Somewhere amongst the shadowy stacks and the many basements of the British library, something is very much amiss - and we're not talking late returns here. Is it a ghost, or something much worse? PC Peter Grant really isn't looking forward to finding out....

    "Short vignette for the fans"

A fun story that's really more of a short scene. Nice to see Postmartin have a bit of fun. Honestly, don't bother with this unless you already know the series. No concessions are made for noobs; it's just dropped there for you to find. Or, then again, maybe do just spend a few minutes listening to this and if you are intrigued, go back and get the books.

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is brilliant as ever. It makes such a difference to the quality of the audiobook when the author and reader work together. Kobna is so comfortable as Peter Grant and Ben Aaronovitch's world that it's always a pleasure to listen to him.

A great short story from the Rivers of London series, it would be wonderful if all the graphic novels were issued as short stories too!

"A Peter Grant bonus short story"

London PC Peter Grant gets called to the British Museum, which has a serious problem in one of its many basements. They think it's a poltergeist; something, at least, is moving things around in ways that can't be accounted for by the actions of staff and users. Grant thinks this is unlikely, because of how modern the building is, but given the ancient, rare, historical, and otherwise valuable items in the collection, can't rule it out.

And so he goes hunting through the basements. But is he hunting a ghost, a poltergeist, something else?

And has he brought the right equipment?

This is a nice little short story, an Audible exclusive, that adds to the world-building and character development of the series. It's an additional little treat if you've been reading the series, and a nice introduction to Peter Grant if you haven't been.

This story was free on Audible when I downloaded it.

A lot of paranormal with a mix of Steampunk. Nothing I am too excited about and I will forget all of it by next week, but it is free and is only a half hour of my life. Certainly worth a go.

The SODDEN narrator does a fine job.

"Excellent as usuall, just to short, will take It."

Every audiobook in this series gets better, this was a snippet, but listening to this narrator, is about as good as they get, imho of course. I sincerely hope that he will release these little short stories in between novels, especially if we are going to have to wait any significant amount of time, again just imho.
Great story, writer and narrator. A winning trifecta

    "Dangers of Librarians and Poltergeists"

It's a short story so it's hard to say much without giving some of the plot away. What a fantastic taste of Peter Grant, at it again. The usual dry, irreverent humour that makes it such a excellent read with loads of laugh out loud moments. This is a short adventure with Peter and Post Martin. Even if you've never read any of the earlier books, you'll still enjoy it, and with the vocal genius of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, you'll be hooked!

Thank you Ben Aaronovitch and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith!

This was an enjoyable short story.

Your writing, Ben, and performance, Kobna, are top-notch and the Peter Grant series is one of the best audio book series.

    "Want MORE!"

The long wait between full-length books detailing the exploits of Peter Grant and the Folly can be filled with such a sense of desolation. Which makes finding these lovely little side projects so wonderful. While the shortness of the piece left me profoundly wanting more, I quite enjoyed the performance. Now that we’ve met Hatbox, the head librarian, I dearly want to see more of her interactions with Peter and the Archivist.

Which is, of course, the beauty of the RIVERS OF LONDON series: Aaronovitch fills them with such wonderful characters. They feel almost alive and make me wish to spend more time in their presence.

    "Only fair"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

There could have been more story development. The story could have been told in a few sentences. Peter is summoned to library to investigate possible poltergeist. Nightingale is out of town. Peter, Toby the dog, librarian and one other go to haunted area. At start of investigating the stacks, the device is seen. Device followed. Device captured. Story ends with plans for confining device at The Folly. Questions were brought up then ignored. A lot of background information is given about the location, types of books stored, librarian's history. I wish more words were spent on plot.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Boring, disappointed.

Which character – as performed by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – was your favorite?

He does an excellent job with all the characters. Male, female, young, old, ill or healthy all are excellent. It is hard to pick a favorite.

Was A Rare Book of Cunning Device worth the listening time?

    It was ok.

    Any additional comments?

It is fair book. I was disappointed with plot.
