The brand new thriller in the San Diego Case Files series from Sunday Times bestselling author Karen Rose
'High wire suspense that keeps you riveted' Lisa Gardner

Homicide Detective Kit McKittrick and psychologist Sam Reeves arrive at Mary Sherman's house after she fails to turn up for an arranged meeting with Kit's foster sister Akiko. Three weeks earlier, Akiko received a call from Mary out of the blue claiming she had information about her birth mother. Now, Kit, Sam and Akiko land on her doorstep only to come under fire from an unknown shooter and to discover Mary's dead body inside the house.

Who was Mary to Akiko? What information did she have, and why did she choose now to come forward? If her murder is not a coincidence, Akiko's safety could be at risk.

Kit is determined to find answers for her sister, but every piece of information revealed just leads to more questions, and no one connected to Akiko's story is quite who they seem. And there's a major stumbling block: an injured Kit has been officially taken off the investigation, and ignoring the order could have lasting consequences for her career. But how can she sit back when she, her sister and the people around them are in serious danger?

Critic reviews

Praise for Karen Rose
Karen Rose delivers the kind of high-wire suspense that keeps you riveted (Lisa Gardner)
Effortlessly balances romance and crime . . . An excellent example of how far-reaching and varied romance can be
Fast and furious

Gripping storyline but with too many nauseating scenes.
It doesn’t add anything to the plot to have Kit and Sam smooching and ‘looking at each other’, on the one hand Kit is a very capable independent woman detective , but then she’s somehow morphed into a pathetic

Great storyline but…..

I loved the main characters in this story and the outer ones too. Great story line, quite complicated with a lot of names but just about managed to hang onto it.

Karen Rose is back as my favourite author

All the McKittricks are amazing but Kit is definitely my favourite, she is strong and confident when it comes to her job, however, frequently doubts her worth when it comes to her personal life. She's smart and a little bit reckless but that's what makes her the fantastic cop she is. And that she has now lowered her walls and finally let Sam in makes my heart happy, he values everything about her and knows just how to support her, how to refocus her when she gets bogged down in details and most of all how to accept help from those who love her.
This is a tough case for Kit because it hits so close to home when Akiko is targeted, it brings back memories of losing Wren, but that just makes her more determined. The secrets that are revealed as the investigation proceeds are heartbreaking, horrifying and dangerous with many people becoming victims and numerous police officers injured. The pressure is rising at SDPD with inside info being leaked, Kit going rogue and other officers refusing to leave the building as they fear for their life....nothing is as it seems and questions are asked.
This is a fantastic addition to the San Diego Case Files series, please tell me there will be more from her team, more from the McKittricks and more of Kit and Sam.
I listened to this on Audible but I also have the Kindle version to read it too!

I LOVE the McKittricks!
