About this listen

The course of Frank Mackey's life was set by one defining moment when he was nineteen. The moment his girlfriend, Rosie Daly, failed to turn up for their rendezvous in Faithful Place, failed to run away with him to London as they had planned. Frank never heard from her again. Twenty years on, Frank is still in Dublin, working as an undercover cop. He's cut all ties with his dysfunctional family. Until his sister calls to say that Rosie's suitcase has been found. Frank embarks on a journey into his past that demands he reevaluate everything he believes to be true.

Critic reviews

Every holiday needs a good crime novel and French's skilful thrillers are tailor-made to terrify
Even more gripping than her last two. A truly amazing novel - so brilliant on dysfunctional family dynamics, with characters so real that you can hardly believe someone's made them up.
Gripping. Tana French's third novel hooks the reader from the outset; the characters are masterfully drawn, and the author's ear for Dublin dialogue is pitch-perfect.
A gripping, literate thriller laced with black humour
If you're only going to buy one thriller this year, let it be Tana French's Faithful Place. Searing, utterly Dub, and very funny . . . Tana French, Dublin author of international hits . . . is a wonder. Just don't plan anything if you pick this up; you won't be able to put it down.
Charming - will leave readers begging for a sequel
French copperfastens her reputation as an author of exceptional insight and talent.
She lifts the lid on Dublin and offers a haunting portrait of a man belatedly dealing with his demons

Loved every minute of this book .. would recommend to anyone who enjoys a bit of a mystery. It’s given me something to chat to my Da about .. so many familiar things in this book. Fabulously narrated and a great story. Love the characters and especially the main character - many recognisable scenarios with the family dynamics. Again, it’s going to be hard to find another book to match to this.

Brilliant !

I don’t enjoy this book and was often close to not finishing. Not one of the men had any appeal: aggressive, foul mouthed and chauvinistic beings have no appeal. The women and girls didn’t use quite so many obscenities and were generally more compassionate and likeable.
I was quite surprised, and very disappointed, to find that it was written by a woman - maybe she believes that equality for women mean they need to behave like men but with breasts. Not for me, thank you.

Overlong though with some occasional flashes of humanity and descriptive background the constant thread of aggression and violence was too overbearing and beyond my patience.

Distinctly unenjoyable

I enjoyed this book as a description of Dublin & a certain character of those who lived in the Liberties. Gerry O’Brien’s narration was excellent & he brought the actors especially Frank to life.
The bits I liked less were: the obvious signposting to the real villain, the lack of explanation as to how the second murder went down & a slightly inconclusive ending. For such a long listen, would have expected more (as Scorcher would say) ‘closure’.

Great narration, slightly too obvious story

I have enjoyed every book in the series thus far and this, in my opinion is the best. Fantastic narration of a clever and complicated story.

Best in the series thus far
