Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES Music Book of the Year

Faith, Hope and Carnage is a meditation on faith, art, music, freedom, grief and love.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with the journalist Seán O’Hagan, it is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity. The audiobook has been recorded so that the listener, especially when playing through headphones, sits between Cave and O’Hagan.

The book draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years. The audiobook features 16 musical codas and elements from the Carnage, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen albums. It also includes an exclusive, additional 12-minute conversation between Cave and O’Hagan about the production of the recording.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.

So beautiful

I have no other words … beautiful from both Sean and Nick. Will revisit for sure!

Thank you

I can’t express how much I enjoyed this, beautifully lead by Sean and thoughts and experiences wonderfully articulated by Nick. As someone who has lost both parents recently, it’s hard to talk about everything that is caught up in that. So thank you so much. X

Unforgettable

I listened to this walking on clear mornings, and so often it took my breath away. There sometimes is a rawness and honesty when Cave talks about loss and pain that are very stark. But there is also a thread of hope - “optimism with a broken heart”.

Great, emotional book, mediocre delivery.

Do stick with it, like everyone says. It's narrated really poorly. They sound like Primary school kids reading out their end of year play. But it's worth it. Some really nice, inspirational stuff.

Just wow

I knew Nicks music, I knew a bit about him through his media presence. But this is a whole new level!
Bravo to Nick and Sean!

It has left me unsure of what I can possibly read or listen to next , I felt so involved

I started listening to this as a casual Nick Cave fan, knowing a little about the traumas he had recently encountered in a short space of time and the title of the book lead me to believe that it was in fact, a reflection of recent events. I had read that Rowan Williams, the former Arch Bishop of Canterbury, was struck by the conversations of engagement of faith in this book, which also compelled me to listen to it.
It makes for particularly interesting listening because it is evident that it is a conversation between two friends. I have only recently started to listen to audio books instead of reading a hard copy. With this particular book, I can’t imagine that reading it would have the same impact as the audio book. I feel as though it’s an extension of The Red Hand Files. I feel a little lost now it has ended because I know that the whole conversation is ongoing.

Captivating

Truly a captivating and raw listen through the journey of loss and grief, from one of our most important artists. Cannot recommend enough if you're a fan.

Fantastic

I am certain that I will listen to this once again in the near future.
Even if you are not a fan of Mr.Cave ‘s music, the topics that are being discussed ( grief, to name just one) are valuable for everyone !

Insightful and deeply moving

I didn’t want this to end. I have just finished listening for the first time and will start listening again when I’ve finished this review. One of the most insightful, moving, thought-provoking and inspiring discussions about creativity and grief and meaning - and everything! - that I’ve ever read. Listening to Nick Cave speak felt like a privilege, because he is so eloquent, open and thoughtful. It has given me a whole new love and appreciation of his music, especially the more recent albums. I cannot recommend this highly enough. A fascinating and brilliant interview.
