Summary

Strangers meet, romance blossoms. But there's a test...A classic fairytale retold.

Good English families all have a house in the country with a deer park, a trout stream, and an army of gardeners. They should have a son and if it can be managed, he should be handsome. Cleverness isn't important. Daughters in limited quantities are fine so long as they are pretty. Bastards are inconvenient and best ignored. It's not a big problem, unless you are one. Unfortunately, Sophy is.

Sick of her outcast role, she escapes her father's house, only to fall from her horse during a spring storm. Injured, soaked, and shivering, she stumbles to a stranger's door - Tom, a blunt edged merchant from a family of vulgar upstarts. Mistaking Sophy for the genuine article, he takes her in. Sophy can't resist twisting the truth. Soon she's caught in her own snare - and it might just be a noose.

Pretty Good Story. Narration not so much.

This was quite a interesting story and starts at the beginning of Sophy's life at the age of about 8 I believe all they way through her early adult life through the happily ever after.

I really did enjoy the story quite a bit. I liked the the relationship Sophy and her step mother formed. It was good and not the usual evil stepmom story we all expect.

I did not enjoy the narration very much. Lucy Patterson's didn't really even try to do a male's voice. Very disappointing when a narrator doesn't try.

Creative and Enjoyable

I loved the creative plot and positive nature of this story. Characters were varried and enjoyable. It was wonderful reading a romantic book without any nudity or smut. It was refreshing. Narrators voices for individual characters were very well done

Something different. And quite good.

Excellent debut novel. Sophie is the illegitimate daughter of Lord Fairchild, and I particularly liked how the author showed the ups and downs of Sophie's childhood and adolescent years. The characters are realistic and complex; nobody is entirely good or bad. And there is a bit of a "mystery" regarding Sophie's choice of a groom. Will it be the wealthy Cit next door or her aristocratic cousin Alisdair? The outcome is not obvious.

I enjoyed Lucy Paterson's narration, having earlier been impressed with her narration of Mary Stewart’s Wildfire at Midnight. I am moving on to the next installment, also available via Audible Escape.

Lightly Sweet 👒

How I loved this story. It was sweet, humorous and just what I needed in between more serious books.

Sophie is such a lovely heroine. She knows her place in the family and is quite content to embrace it so when things go better than expected she is adorably gracious.
I couldn't help but love her dearly.

The story unfolded quite quickly in the beginning, which initially kind of disappointed me. Now I realize that expanding on the beginning would have made for a different story. One that might not have been as light and funny. Having said that, I do think that the story could have benefited by expanding a few other points in the story, especially when it came to Sophie's father. He was such an interesting character, but we didn't really get to know much of him. Towards the middle I had hopes that he was finally getting his moment, but no.

Set aside it's quick pace, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It loosely reminded me of Georgette Heyer's Arabella, an all time fave. Lucy Patterson did a wonderful job narrating the story and given that she narrates the rest of the series, I will definitely be listening to them all.

An enjoyable and amusing story with great narration

This is one of the best audio books I've listened to. Lucy Paterson's narration is perfect! The story is charming, with bits of humor throughout. Many times I found myself laughing out lound! This is my favorite book in the fair child series, and I've listened to it at least 10 times. Sophie is a sweet girl who doesn't really have a place in high society, because she is born out of wedlock. Tom is a strong and stubborn man of trade, and refuses to fit into the uppity social class. When Sophie unexpectedly shows up on Tom's door step, he tries to evade her and his feelings for her. However, Sophie needs to win Tom over so he won't divulge her societal faux pas. So, in true romance fashion, Tom reluctantly finds himself falling for Sophie, and she with him. Their sarcastic humors and quick wits pair perfectly with each other. Jasper, the brother, is hilarious, and I enjoyed his story in, "Courting Scandal". I recommend the whole series. The stories never drag, and Lucy Paterson gives the right amount of inflection to keep a listener absorbed in the story.

Historical novel portraying the rules of marriage.

A different era when social standing effected everything. A young girl defies the odds and finds happiness regardless of rules.
