Summary

My name is Simon. I’m 10 years old. I’m a serial killer. Robert Stern (Rupert Penry-Jones), a successful defense attorney, doesn’t know what lies in store for him when he agrees to meet a new client in a derelict estate on the outskirts of Berlin. Stern is more than surprised, when his old love interest and professional nurse Carina (Emilia Fox) presents him a ten year old boy as his new client. Simon (Jack Boulter), a terminally ill child, who is convinced he has murdered many men in a previous life.

Robert’s surprise turns into horror when he and Carina find human remains in a cellar the boy has led them to. The remains of a man whose head has been split with an axe 15 years ago - just like Simon claimed he had. Things go from bad to worse within hours when Stern discovers more dead bodies, the investigating police officer Engler (Andy Serkis) starts to chase him as a suspect in the murder cases, and his own past comes to haunt him. Stern’s friend and former criminal Andi Borchert (Stephen Marcus) is the only one to believe Stern and Carina. Hunted by the police, and led by Simon’s memories, they start to investigate shady sub cultures of Berlin, and soon discover things that more gruesome than anything they could have imagined…

Critic reviews

"The Child is an unmissable milestone for fans and newcomers to audio dramas alike. A compelling, star-studded drama that mixes narration, performance, music and soundscapes into a moving story about a troubled young boy and a shocking series of dark crimes in Berlin. Essential listening," (David Hewson, author of The Killing series, co-author Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel and Macbeth: A Novel.)

Not my idea of the concept for Audible.

Any additional comments?

I bought the full book but had to return it. The music was very offputting. The words should be enough to spark the imagination. I do not want someone else's idea influencing me. With all the voices - dramatic pauses between chapters, I was left confused. I wasn't able to give the actual story a fair chance. It may have been very good. Gave up! I really hope this is not going to be the way forward for Audible

Don't think this is for me

How could the performance have been better?

The 'special effects' were off putting, and detracted from the story. The 'mystery' voice was muffled at times, and hard to understand.

Did FREE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS - The Child inspire you to do anything?

Not to go further, I'm afraid.

Any additional comments?

While I like a narrator to be able to distinguish the characters from each other, I think I would prefer a good old, straight forward reading to this.

Very disappointed

What would have made FREE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS - The Child better?

A good narrator reading it and none of the background noise.

Any additional comments?

Thought this was an interesting concept for an audible book but I disliked all the background noise so much that I had to turn off after 10 minutes so can't really comment on the story itself. Very glad the first two chapters were offered free as I would not have been happy to have spent money on this.

Doesn't play on Android

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Just one snag. Microsoft Silver light does not work with Android systems so I can't play it. Big mistake Audible.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sebastian Fitzek again?

No idea.

How could the performance have been better?

No idea.

What character would you cut from FREE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS - The Child?

No idea.

Any additional comments?

I'd love to be able to play it.
