Summary

"Evil's Unlikely Assassin is a promising urban fantasy debut that features all that's great about the genre--action, attitude, and ass-kicking." (Jaye Wells, USA Today best-selling author of The Sabina Kane and Prospero's War series)

Vampire Alexis Black is on a mission - to rejoin the human race. Coerced into signing an ironclad contract by an angel-with-attitude, Alexis must hunt down and assassinate at least one vampire, werewolf, or creepy crawly every night for 50 years to become human again. Too bad the contract didn’t mention the badass vampire who now rides shotgun in her brain, insatiable bloodlust, or her new I-hate-everything-with-fangs sidekick. If she can fulfill her end of the bargain, her humanity is restored, if not she will be destroyed.

But when a revenge-seeking bloodsucker threatens her city, Alexis must risk everything to ensure there’s a humanity to return to. Since her vampire nature is her greatest weapon to defeat the monsters that threaten her friends and future, Alexis must choose to accept her inner beast or watch those she loves die.

Can’t wait for book 2

Vampire Alexis Black wants to be human again so she makes a deal with an Angel , she has to kill one vampire , werewolf or other dangerous supernatural every night for 50 years. What the Angel fails to mention is the vampire with a blood lust that rides shot gun in her brain and her side kick who hates all vampires.
When a vampire with a grudge starts attacking humans in her city Alexis risks everything to ensure safety to the humans but to do this she must embrace the inner beast and trust her side kick.
I really loved this book and Chelsea Stephens did such a great job narrating.

Unique Adult Urban Fantasy

The story was a bit confusing at first. I felt lost and thought that perhaps this book was not for me, but fortunately, I stayed with it until things were sorted out and explained. About 2-3 hrs in, I really started getting into the story and started enjoying the characters more. There is quite a bit of action and some twists and turns I did not see coming.

The narration was pretty good and brought the story to life. I enjoyed her multiple voices that made it easy to know who was speaking.

This was really an unusual take on vampires. Alexis is very unique and it took me a bit to figure out why. She has a dark past and a unique pact that makes her "Evil's Assassin". If you start reading and get confused, keep going things will be explained and all will make sense in due time.

I'm looking forward to the second book. I want to see how her unique team continues to work together to protect humans and search for an old adversary.

The story concluded without a big cliffhanger which I'm grateful for.

Warmed Up To Story And Narrator

When I started listening to this story, I wasn't sure that I was going to like it. I wasn't sure if Ms. Stephens was a good choice to tell me Alexis Black's story. Then as I continued to listen, I came to the conclusion that she was the perfect choice. Since this story is from Alexis' point of view, it would be strange to hear a man tell the story. And eventually I came to form, in my mind, what Alexis might look and act like. Her weapon of choice seemed to have a life of its own which I don't think I would feel if I went and read the book instead.

Ms. Windrow had me thinking of possibilities. It's possible that there's an Alexis Black out there somewhere. She has challenges both internal and the world around her. Now she doesn't fight evil on her own - she has a partner. There were times that I couldn't decide whether I liked him or not. That just shows how good the author is at her job. There's a lot going on here since Alexis has a really tough job. She's a strong female character and not worried about damaging a fingernail.

Once I finally got into the story, I had to listen every chance I got. I even got to enjoy most of the secondary characters. They all helped move the story along. Nothing felt out of place - that it didn't fit the scene. Does it make me mean that I actually started rooting for the enemy of the piece? Make no mistake, I didn't like him but knowing he was still around meant that my adventure with this author, maybe this narrator, and one kick a** woman isn't over yet.

I voluntarily reviewed an Audiobook copy of this book.

Great Audible Listen🎧 A Fabulous Urban Fantasy!

4.5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is a well written, well told action packed story that immediately grabs your attention and holds it to the end. The storylines are interesting, imaginative and original. Jenn Windrow created a fascinating world with supernatural creatures, vampires, angels & shifters who live amongst humans. The lead character, Alexis Black, an anti-vampire vampire, who made a deal with the an angel so she could be returned to humanity. Part of her deal is to not kill humans and to capture vampires and work with a human partner, Reaper. She meets some interesting character, including an old vamp friend turned ghost, who is one of my favorite characters. The action in this book is non-stop, there is plenty of drama, suspense and some romance too. Jean Windrow, thank you for this great & entertaining story.

I listened to the Audible edition, Chelsea Stephens does a wonderful job narrating the story and bringing the characters to life. She sets the perfect tone for the story and adds the right amount of dramatic flair. She is an entertaining storyteller. Thank you for the great listen.

Refreshing, clever spin on new paranormal world

I’m a huge fan of paranormal and urban fantasy reads, and when I came across this new-to-me author and series, I just had to see what it was all about. What a refreshing and clever spin on a new and fascinating paranormal world, with a kick-ass vampire assassin/heroine who I love everything about! Alexis Black’s story is quite unique and what makes her so much different than the average vampire, besides sharing her body with another, is that she still has a hold of her humanity and that allows her to fight for humans and rid the world of what she truly despises… those that have destroyed her family and taken her soul. Alexis is joined by quite an interesting cast of secondary characters, and at times it’s quite comical how they “get along”. My favorite by far is Nathan… and I’m SO glad I listened to the audio because the narrator, Chelsea Stephens, brought him to life with the perfect British accent and zaniness to his lines. As a whole the narration was amazing, and I loved getting to know the personalities of this unconventional bunch. I look forward to continuing with this series, and discovering how the rest of Alexis’ world unfolds.

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a great urban fantasy novel with excellent narration and an engaging main character. The author does a good job with world building and dialog. I thought the author had a unique approach to vampires which was a nice surprise. All in all, I really enjoyed the listen and am looking forward to continuing the series.

Entertaining

Evil’s Unlikely Assassin is about a vampire who has agreed to work for an angel in exchange for the ability to be human again. The undead trade though comes with peril and risks but also rewards. The characters are likable and believable. The romance and bedroom scenes are well written. The narrator did a great job at a speed of about 1.5. Pretty fun & I love the evil slant

Set in Chicago, Alexis is a reluctant hero looking for redemption. In fact, she’s got a payment plan to buy her way into redemption. It’s a hard bargain with a angel that let’s this vampire slay her way back to the side of good. I had a lot of fun with this book! It was more entertaining than I expected, and I have to hang my head in shame that I pre-judged the story based on the book cover. I adore urban fantasy and the description had my interest peaked but the book cover made me think this leaned more towards paranormal romance, which isn’t that much fun for me. I’m very happy to say that this book sits firmly in the urban fantasy genre while also having a few sexy scenes.

Reaper is Alexis’s handler, providing info on evil supernaturals for her to target. She has to kill one supernatural a night if she’s to keep both the deal-wielding angel and her on board inner demon (Eddie) happy. This is sometimes problematic and can be dangerous to any clueless civilians in the area.

Then there’s the chemical-tinkering doc Julian. He’s hunting for his twin sister Julia while also providing an injectable that can mask most supernaturals from detection for a short time. I did find the instalust thing between him and Alexis very sudden, even though I feel they are good for each other later in the story. They went to a club together to hunt for info on his sister’s whereabouts and they fall into a grinding dance routine… um… really? That was a bit silly. But I like how Julian has a big secret, and that gives him a little bit of depth.

There’s very few women in this story in general. Even Julia has few lines and is in need of rescuing (both from an evil vampire and some spilling out of her shirt). I would have enjoyed the story more if there had been another kick-ass lady or 3.

Nathan was fun. He’s one of Alexis’s oldest friend and he unexpectedly gets to ghost along for the ride. He’s the comic relief for the story, always making jokes and letting his baser desires dictate some of his choices.

The plot was pretty basic (rescue the damsel in distress and take out the big evil baddie awhile also proving you have control over your inner demon). The action was never far away and I was kept entertained the entire time. I look forward to seeing what Alexis tackles next. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Chelsea Stephens was a good pick for Alexis. She sounded hard and deadly when she needed to but could also be sensual during the few love scenes. Her accents were pretty rough, but the British accent for Nathan smoothed out over the coarse of the book. Stephens’s pacing was perfect and there were no technical issues with the recording. 4.5/5 stars.

A good new take on vampires

A good new take on vampires; with one that is trying to get out of the “life” or her un-life as a vamp. Nice world building with out feeling that you are getting an info dump. You will meet a verity of people from various realms in immortal and mortal life. If you like your leading lady with snark and heart, able to hold her own in a fight without being over the top; then this is a series you will get into. I will enjoy getting more in this series.

This Was FANTASTIC!!!

*I was given a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book*

in case you didn't notice, THIS WAS FANTASTIC!! When i looked at this title originally i thought "hey, this looks interesting, maybe I will have some fun with this." And oh was i right about this. Alexis Black is bad ass, funny, and a great main character. Her adventure was exciting, interesting, and I didn't want it to end. I got into this book more than I was exciting and i am happy to say I read 75% of it the day I started. Highly recommended.

*No Spoilers*
Lets start with what I consider as the most important part of a book, the characters. First we have Alexis (a bad ass vampire assassin) and her "team" Eddie, Reaper, Julian, and my favorite Nathan. I can honestly say that I enjoyed all of these characters greatly. When the story began, I was a little worried they would be your stereotypical roles. Blood thirsty vampire, pissed off tough guy, and Deadpool style comic relief character. I am happy to say I was wrong, while they do somewhat play these parts, all of the characters have depth, personality, and feel believable in their given circumstances. And I love the dynamic that developed between the group as the story progresses.

Chelsea Stephens did a great job with these characters. While some of her male voices sounded a little off, she never failed to bring out their personalities and emotions. Ans the book greatly benefited from her performance. And I am happy that she will being returning to narrate the sequel (based on the sneak peak at the second book).

The world was also very interesting, similar to other urban fantasies in which the world is like our own with some adaptations that come with the addition of vampires, ware wolves, and such. In this story the world felt believable even with these new additions. With the police agency VAU and the almost drug deal style of selling blood to vampires as a pretty accurate representation of what the world would probably be like if it had such beings existed.

And finally I wanted to talk about the writing, mainly the story itself. Starting off it took some getting used to, as there is little setup and you are thrust into an ongoing situation. This made figuring out which character was which, and who they are in the story a little challenging for the first few chapters. However, after this point it gets explained more and it is smooth sailing from there. And also (as I mentioned before) there were some moments in the story that really surprised me. They made the characters feel more real and gave an understanding to how they became the way they are. These moments really benefited the story and is what pushed it to 5 stars from what would be a solid 4.

Overall, this was a very well done urban fantasy book that I enjoyed greatly. I highly recommend it and I am excited to listen to the next part of Alexis Black's adventure. Very well done Jenn Windrow and Chelsea Stephens.
