Summary
An eye-opening, no-holds-barred guide to the perimenopause and menopause written by campaigner, journalist and documentary-maker Kate Muir.
Everything You Need to Know About the Menopause (But Were Too Afraid to Ask) is the thinking woman’s guide to the menopause, bringing you answers to all those questions that have been hidden behind a veneer of misplaced shame, bad science and centuries of patriarchy.
- What’s the perimenopause, and when will it strike? (It’s sooner than you think.)
- What’s happening to my body - and my mind?
- Why can’t I stop thinking about sex in perimenopause?
- How do I get my sex drive back after menopause?
- How do I look after my body and brain when my hormones disappear?
Muir draws on interviews with the leading medical experts in the field, interlaced with her own tumultuous journey through menopause and the personal stories of women from all walks of life, sharing their varied experiences and hard-earned wisdom.
Muir also questions why the current medical establishment is getting menopause so wrong, as she debunks the myths that surround hormone replacement therapy and exposes the sloppy science and hysterical headlines that have had a negative impact on women’s health for the last 20 years.
It’s essential that we understand the biology of our own bodies during this critical period that will define the latter half of our lives. With the help of a panel of doctors, scientists and health experts, Muir unpacks the science behind hormones and ageing and takes a close look at the different options available for treating both body and mind during the profound changes that take us into midlife and beyond.
What she discovers is that both symptoms and treatment are far more extensive and diverse than we might expect. Menopause is the whole package, and the treatment needs to be, too, with impacts as wide ranging as preventing Alzheimer’s, boosting sex drive and protecting mental health.
This ground-breaking guide is a social, cultural and scientific exploration into a criminally overlooked and under-discussed phenomenon that will affect one billion of us by 2025. And it is a manifesto for change, calling for equality in healthcare and an entirely new approach to women’s health.

Every woman needs to read this book
This book was recommended to me by a work colleague I am 52 and in the menopause. This book is well researched and up to date. I actually listened to this on audible which is narrated by the author. A great listen. Every woman needs this book. It’s full of important, shocking, well-researched facts, experiences, revelations…I can’t believe how little I knew and how overdue this is. I’m telling everyone about it. Definitely an eye opener. For some one who didn't want to go on HRT. I will now be making a doctor's appointment. Wish me 🤞

6/7 years off hell!
I kid you not in the past 6/7 years I've been sent on 2 MRI, I've had a miscarriage, 2 Xray, countless medicines, Pain Management Program, diagnosed with chronic pain/ fibromyalgia, off work on the sick, nearly lost my partner, lost friends and confessed to a psychologists I thought I was broken inside and that's just what I can remember because I am a fraction of the person I used to be. I asked for my bloody to be checked, and the day after the DR rang back! at 47, I'm not peri I've gone through the menopause FHS bloods 99! I'm still having periods. Dr offered me HRT, and I said, "Let me look into it." Thank you for this book and all the go-to places for more information. I can't wait to start HRT and maybe I can be the mum I should have been all along to my 8yr old. Not one health professional suggested menopause.

Murky menopause made sense
Such a great helpful insightful book. New to the realisation I am falling down this tunnel of hormone hijacking this book is an awareness life saver and is filled with insightful words amongst the deep understanding of the fog that carries you through and gets in the way. A person who knows what you’re feeling and what you might not have had the words yet to verbalise.

Every women needs this book
Until listening to this book, my understanding of the menapause was a hot flush, something that happened to women in their 50’s and HRT was to be feared. WOW was I wrong. This book is very well researched and written. I feel like a child back in school learning about puberty for the first time. I’m so thankful to the author for being so honest and helping to bring about much needed change and education about the Menapause. We need a female health revolution and finally to make body identical HRT freely available to every single women who chooses to take it. Listen to this book and then tell your friends. Arm yourself with the facts which this book gives you as many doctors shockingly are not trained or up-to-date with the latest Menapause research. Remember Knowledge Is Power.

Exceptionally helpful and informative
What a brilliant book. The author has done more to clarify and help me in this area than anyone in the medical profession. This book could save your life and if not then it will make it much better! I will be recommending it to anyone who may benefit from its wisdom (most of the population and especially GPs). Thank you.
