Summary
Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee - a girl who inherited her mother's bright-blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair.
Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfil the dreams they were unable to pursue. But Lydia is under pressures that have nothing to do with growing up in 1970s small town Ohio. Her father is an American born of Chinese immigrants and his ethnicity, and hers, make them conspicuous.
When Lydia's body is found in a lake, James is consumed by guilt and sets out on a reckless path. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to make someone accountable. Lydia's brother, Nathan, is convinced that local bad boy Jack is involved. But it's the youngest in the family - Hannah - who may be the only one who knows what really happened.
Critic reviews
"[A] moving tale...of daughters for whom cultural disconnect is but the first challenge." (Vogue)
"The mysterious circumstances of 16-year-old Lydia Lee's tragic death have her loved ones wondering how, exactly, she spent her free time. This ghostly debut novel calls to mind The Lovely Bones." (Marie Claire)
"There is much here that might impress Pulitzer and Man Booker judges." (Mark Lawson, Guardian)

Engaging and thought provoking
I found the audiobook well ready and captivating. I thought the story of the family was engaging enough without being truly riveting. It provided food for thought. I found it a good way to pass time.

Brilliant
Loved this very thought provoking story. A 16 year old girl is found dead in a nearby lake. The story then unfolds revealing her parent’s past and how they failed to reach their dreams so try to push their children into having the sort of lives they wanted for themselves.

Very well written...
thought plot was a little slow for me. I was drawn in very early in....then it got a little boring in the middle and picked right back up at the end. a writer with huge potential though I'd say.

Sad and credible
A sad and credible story of a family falling apart, a suicide and a repair. It was a very credible story but I wasn’t as moved as perhaps I could have been with the characters’ troubles. The narration was good although the interpretation of tone for some characters a bit strange at times, as if the character was confused when they weren’t meant to be.

A smart, sensitive page turner
Not as exquisitely plotted as Little Fires Everywhere (which is the better book) but just as engrossing and sensitively written. Her characters are always believable.

Good book but no light moments
Good book and story and well performed but for when you want serious book. Not light subject or content.

Beautiful story
Its a sad one, but it is beautiful. So delicately written. Celeste Ng sure does have a way with words & perspectives, touching on so many important issues. Defo recommend if you want a story to remind you to say the things you have never said, to be true to who you are and always do you!!

Incredibly depressing.
It’s not badly written and it wasn’t badly performed but I feel like I wasted an awful lot of my life listening to it. All the characters were Rather sad and became more miserable as a story progressed. I think I kept listening in the hope that there would be some kind of twist or redemption or just energy. Will not be reading this author again.
