Summary

Jennifer Sylvester made her deal with the devil...and now, they’re engaged!

But all is not well in Green Valley. A chicken choker is on the loose, 61 dead birds most "fowl" need plucking, and no time remains for Jennifer and her devilish fiancé.

Desperate to find a spare moment together, Jenn and Cletus’s attempts to reconnect are thwarted by one seemingly coincidental disaster after another.

It’s not long before Cletus and Jenn see a pattern emerge, and the truth becomes clear. Sabotage!

Will an undercover mission unmask the culprit? Or, are these lovebirds totally plucked?

Engagement and Espionage is the first book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries series, a full-length cozy mystery, and is a spin-off of Penny Reid's Winston Brothers series. This novel is best listened to after Beard Science, Winston Brothers, book three.

Penny’s World never disappoints!

I have throughly enjoyed every minute of this audiobook. I purposely didn’t buy the book once I knew Joy Nash & Chris Brinkley were narrating and as ever they brought the story to life - they are fantastic narrators. Penny you have such a quick mind and wicked sense of humour; I applaud you. Cletus or Billy...I still can’t decide!

If you’ve already heard the sneak peak...

Skip to 5:40 in Chapter 3 if you’ve already listened to the Sneak Peek which was semi-obnoxiously added on to every single other Winston Brothers book.

Beard Science Extra Epilogue

If you loved Beard Science because of Cletus and Jenn you’ll love E&E too! This is a cozy romantic mystery with a couple who is devoted to each other but still have a few hurdles to overcome. The mystery is a good backdrop for their relationship issues and I enjoyed how they played out and getting behind the various personalities and vulnerabilities of several of these characters. This is basically an extended epilogue in the form of a full novel, there no “secondary romance” or anything like that: just Jenn and Cletus. But the Winston family is back and the interactions and support are lovely and entertaining to read. Love this story like the rest!

Listen, but check your expectations

This book is charming because of the narrators. The plot leaves a lot to be desired ... The couple’s relationship is constrained by things they could easily change. This is massively annoying—not pleasantly suspenseful like the author probably intended.

Lack of Engagement and more Espionage

The story was nice, but it was unbelievable about their relationship. What two young people in their 20s didn’t try to find time together at all for months? I understand the dilemma she was having, but again the characters had opportunities in the story and always miss, which made it very frustrating for reading satisfaction such as myself. Even a make out session would have been nice. Overall it was a little dull for me and I didn’t feel any emotion during this read like I did with Reid’s other books. Im still a big fan.

Cletus & Jenn are at it again!

I was delighted to find additional stories about Cletus Winston and his betrothed Jennifer Sylvester! Chris Brinkley and Joy Nash do a delightful job of bringing these characters to life!

Another Great Winston tale

I finished all the Beard stories and needed more. This hit the spot. I liked having more Cletus and Jenn and the mystery was fun. Running off to get the next one.

Penny Reid is a Bubble Off Plumb...

...and probably an evil genius, as well.
I loved the Winston Bros series, and Jenn & Cletus were one of my favorite couples. So this story was bound for my library from the get-go. This is pure Penny Reid insanity in a delightful little package, right here. Cletus and Jenn are at their absolute best in a caper that involves chicken chokers, bee burners, egg stealers, butter-nappers, and some seriously over-jealous bakers.

While this could be read as a stand-alone, this story will be best enjoyed after having read the tale of how Cletus and Jenn came to be in "Beard Science," the third book in the Winston Bros' outrageously epic series. The characters are so quirky, they really need to be understood before fully enjoying this nugget of Appalachian delight. If you're a fan of the Winstons, you'll love this zany story as well.
