Summary

How do you go from being a penniless student in a foreign country to raising four of the most successful creatives working in Great Britain today?

In 1980, Ify exchanged war-torn Nigeria for the strange streets of London. Having escaped death, hunger and extreme poverty, she had to start a new life as a working-class immigrant and student in an environment far removed from her own, in a city brimming with hostility.

Ify met her husband, Joseph, a Yoruba man, in 1981 at a bingo hall in east London where both were working immigrants. After the birth of their children, the couple returned to education before setting up their own businesses. Together they raised their family in the tough working-class area of Tottenham and encouraged them to explore their artistic instincts against the backdrop of sometimes violent situations and harsh environments.

Their children - Joseph Junior (aka Skepta), Jamie (JME), Julie (Former Beats 1 DJ and NME Awards 2020 co-host) and Jason (producer and graphic designer) – all achieved tremendous success.

This is the story of their remarkable mother.

A lovely story!!

I really really enjoyed listening to this woman’s journey. It is the first time I’m learning about the diaspora of Nigerians and also the Biafra war. I now want to know more. Her journey from growing up in Nigeria to moving to London, her hustle and hard working attitude, always wanting to progress and develop herself along with her husband who was also hardworking is really admirable. I’m so inspired. They were a success way before they’re children were, perhaps that hard grafting nature spilled onto them for them to be the big success they are today. I’ve followed Skepta and JME from the early days of grime so it’s great to hear their mother’s story. Filled with the ups and downs it is very well balanced but inspiring all the way. I will be listening to this again! The narration is excellent as well, absolutely loved it!

Honest and endearing

A personal insight into the Biafra war and the complex life of an economic migrant from the early 80s.
It is at times uncomfortably honest as it challenged me to reserve judgement but as I listened to Ify's journey I couldn't help but feel endeared and a huge amount of respect for her tenacity and Jo's love and stability. Thank you for sharing your life with us Mama Adenuga
