अटलजी का मानना है कि साहित्य और राजनीति के अलग-अलग खाने नहीं हैं, और जब कोई साहित्यकार राजनीति करेगा तो वह अधिक परिष्कृत होगी, होनी चाहिए। अपने कार्य-काल में उन्होंने यह करके भी दिखा दिया और देश ही नहीं, दुनिया भर को चकित कर दिया। उन्होंने दिखा दिया कि:

  • कवि-प्रधानमंत्री ही शांति के लिए पश्चिम तथा पूर्व दोनों दिशाओं में बस यात्रा की जोखिम उठा सकता है;
  • युद्ध होने पर वही संयम बनाए रखकर उसी के सहारे न केवल लड़ाई जीत सकता है बल्कि दुनिया-भर की प्रशंसा भी प्राप्त कर सकता है;
  • कवि-प्रधानमंत्री ही चुनाव के धुआंधार में सन्तुलन का सन्देश निरन्तर देता रह सकता है; और उसके बाद बाज़ी जीतकर भी सबको फिर से मिल-जुलकर काम करने की प्रेरणा दे सकता है। इस प्रकार वे राजनीति के साथ कविता को भी एक बिलकुल नया आयाम देते प्रतीत होते हैं।
