Summary

The Sunday Times bestseller

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon

Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive – but not how to live

AudioFile Magazine Earphones Award Winner.

Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.

Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.

One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.

Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?

What a joy!

I have left a review before but this book deserves one. The writing is sublime, the vocabulary a delight and the characters are so artfully portrayed I feel I know them. Eleanor's story is laugh out loud funny and yet so touching it brings tears to your eyes. The style reminds me of early Marian Keyes whereby the protagonist is so human you love them like a friend. Wonderfully ready by the narrator to boot. If you do nothing else this year read this book! I'm off to buy a shopper!!!

As completely fine as the title

Loved this book it gradually reveals Eleanor to you and is both moving and funny in parts. As someone who has survived childhood trauma myself this is a resoundingly true book. Thankyou author.

I love Eleanor Oliphant

Over the first few chapters, I had the feeling that nothing more than the tale of a 20 something nobody might get a bit tiresome over the whole of a book. However, Eleanor Oliphant, while ordinary in many ways, is dealing with a past far from normal.

I won't give too much away, but this courageous and touching tale of one woman's private journey to acknowledge and lay to rest her demons, was as convincing and satisfying as it possibly could be.

It is a tale of how pure, resilient and hopeful a human spirit can be; despite the most enormous challenges.

I am truly going to miss Eleanor Oliphant; with all her wit, intelligence, honesty, emotional truth and also sometimes excruciating naivety. Like a friend, Eleanor remains with me and I find myself wondering just how she is now and what further things have been happening to her, since the novel and my insight into her world ended.

This debut novel is outstanding and I will certainly be looking out for many more by this talented new author.

Most unexpected

I kept getting recommended this book by audibles and resisted as I thought the synopsis was full, but I'm so glad I read it. Something about the way the main character sees and interacts with the world is so engaging.

Excellent story

I loved this book and warmed to Eleanor’s quirky character straight away. Read very well by the narrator too.

Funny and enjoyable

This is different to the usual thrillers that I read but I really really enjoyed it. It’s a great story with believable characters. It’s funny but also sad in parts. The narrator is very believable

Outstanding

This is a beautiful book of human compassion and depravity, told through such a memorable character, with numerous moments of lightness and humour amidst the horror in one’s past. I hugely recommend this book. The writing really is exquisite. I listened to it non-stop.

Funny, Gripping and Thrilling!

I am actually sad that I've finished reading about Eleanor Oliphant. I didn't want the story to end. I was so enthralled by what would happen to her next and it will be hard to let that feeling go.
The entire story is gripping, funny and there are parts that keep you on the edge of your seat. What did Mummy do? How evil is she? How damaged is Eleanor? And will the musician notice her or will Raymond save the day?
The narrator does a fantastic job with her relaxing voice that scared me a couple of times when she broke from that.
I can't wait to see what Gail Honeyman writes next. I'll be at the front of the queue!
