Summary

Marco Belpoliti, L'Espresso

very good, but not his best

I love the way cercas writes simple books. My Spanish is not perfect, but with him I hardly have to concentrate. he doesn't use the poetic language many Spanish writers do. I also like his topics (Spanish civil war) and the 'non fiction novel' style.

the only reason I would not give this book five stars is because it is a bit too much about Javier Cercas trying to write this novel than the novel itself. the character of Manuel mena, soldier in the war, did not really come alive for me...

Thought provoking but not gripping

At times the thoroughly researched details drowned a story that was at its strongest in the contemporary conversations. The analysis of civil war in a small town was powerful.
