El viejo dilema de si una persona, ocasionando la muerte de alguien que no conoce consigue toda la riqueza y el poder es la historia de El Mandarin del portugues Jose Maria Eca de Queiroz (1845-1900). En ella un pobre empleadillo al tocar una campana hace que muera un lejano mandarin en China y hereda sus riquezas. Pero la obsesion de haber sido la causa de la muerte de un inocente embarga al ahora poderoso protagonista y el resto de la historia cuenta sus intentos de rehabilitacion. Es una fantasia ironica que es considerada una de las grandes novelas del ilustre escritor, ya que tiene vigencia permanente.
