Summary

In ruhigem Ton erzählt Theodor Fontane die Geschichte von Effi Briest. In der erdrückenden Atmosphäre "ewigen Lug und Trugs" zerbricht die lebendige junge Frau schließlich - nicht an ihrer Schuld, sondern an der Verlassenheit in ihrem Wunsch nach Redlichkeit und Bekenntnis.

Mit einem Male aber glitt sie von ihrem Sitze vor Innstetten nieder, umklammerte seine Knie und sagte in einem Tone, wie wenn sie betete: "Gott sei Dank!" Innstetten verfärbte sich. Was war das? Etwas, was seit Wochen flüchtig, aber doch immer sich erneuernd über ihn kam, war wieder da und sprach so deutlich aus seinem Auge, daß Effi davor erschrak. Sie hatte sich durch ein schönes Gefühl, das nicht viel was andres als ein Bekenntnis ihrer Schuld war, hinreißen lassen und dabei mehr gesagt, als sie sagen durfte. Sie mußte das wieder ausgleichen, mußte was finden, irgendeinen Ausweg, es koste, was es wolle.
