Summary

The new hilarious and inspirational memoir from Sunday Times number one best-selling author Bryony Gordon.

Bryony Gordon was not a runner. A loafer, a dawdler, a drinker, a smoker, yes. A runner, no. Yet somehow, as she began to recover from the emotional roller coaster of laying her life bare in her mental health memoir Mad Girl, she started to realise that getting outside, moving her body and talking to others for whom life was also an occasional challenge might actually help her.

Going for a run might not banish her sadness, but at least it might show it that she was damn well trying to beat it, which is sometimes half the battle. As she began to run farther, she started to see the limitations she had imposed on her life more clearly. Why couldn't she be a runner? Or a bungee jumper? Or a deep sea diver? Maybe rather than sitting on the sofa watching the world go by, fulfilling your dreams was just about standing up and taking that first step. Maybe you can do it, too.

In April 2017, less than a year after she had weighed herself at over 16 stone but stepped off the scales and started training anyway, Bryony Gordon ran all 26 and 3/4 miles of the London Marathon. Here, in her new typically funny and hugely inspiring memoir, she shows us how extraordinary things can happen to us all, no matter what life throws at us, if we're just willing to keep going.

Fantastic, funny, real and humble

Once again, Bryony Gordon absolutely nails it. I listened to this audio book whenever I had a free minute, it was addictive! I’m a massive fan of her and the work she does. Great book, just downloaded a running app and after struggling to get back into it for a while, this book has really helped - ‘when in doubt, run it out!’ Love it!

Inspired me so much

I listened to this on a couple of my own runs. My own mental health took a real battering in 2017 and this year I set myself two goals that I had come to the realisation may help me. One was to fulfil a life long ambition to actually finish writing a novel and the second was to run a half marathon. The former hasn’t been going to plan. Not really. I had lost confidence. But the running is going well. And so, when Bryony talked early in the book about how you (I) can achieve anything and about how brilliant things will happen I burst in to tears, just 2k in to my planned 12k.

I don’t think I have ever laughed and cried so much to a book as this one. Funny, honest, strangely tense but truly inspiring. I loved it. Thank you Bryony. You’re brilliant.

Really enjoyed this audible book

I didn't want this book to end.
I ran my first marathon in January 2008 20 months after my Dad died and less than 30days after my step Dad died.
It was just something I did, I've now realised the importance of that time on my own mental health.
I too am not a typical runner and could totally relate to this book. Brilliant, dare I say it's given the bug to have another go!

Therapeutic to listen to

I'm currently going through another bad episode of depression and anxiety and listening to this brought much more relief than talking to friends and family. Helped me feel less alone and get my thoughts into perspective. Matt Haig Reasons To Stay Alive also helpful. I feel very grateful to these writers.

Disappointed

Too rambling and uninspired listening to the book. Most of all found the author’s voice really irritating and had to turn it off. Would ideally like a refund.

The combo of two things I'm passionate about

This is an amazing audio book! I laughed, cried, and got lost in deep contemplation. Bryony Gordon's colourful descriptions of her mental health issues and recovery really helped me understand my own in a different light. This book has also kept me motivated in my own running journey, even if I'm not training for a marathon. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in mental health and/or running.
