From internationally bestselling author John Boyne, an inescapably gritty story about one young man whose direction in life takes a vastly different turn than what he expected.

It’s the tabloid sensation of the year: two well-known footballers standing in the dock, charged with sexual assault, a series of vile text messages pointing towards their guilt.

As the trial unfolds, Evan Keogh reflects on the events that have led him to this moment. Since leaving his island home, his life has been a lie on many levels. He’s a talented footballer who wanted to be an artist. A gay man in a sport that rejects diversity. A defendant whose knowledge of what took place on that fateful night threatens more than just his freedom or career.

The jury will deliver a verdict but, before they do, Evan must judge for himself whether the man he has become is the man he wanted to be.

Compelling... a potent portrait of a flawed young man
A strong set-up, and with the masterly Boyne at the helm, the tension never lets up
Utterly compelling… powerful and disturbing
New and ambitious… packed with big ideas, moral questions and social commentary

I love John Boyne's writing and, having enjoyed WATER, I was looking forward to EARTH very much. The story picks up on a strand from Water, and runs with it brilliantly. It's an original premise, and one which I may have shied away from (the world of football) had I not known Boyne's work. However the book was ever so slightly spoiled by, what I believe, to be a glaring plot hole.

SPOILER ALERT:

Surely the police could have accessed the video (it hadn't been deleted), regardless of the physical phone being 'lost'? It bugged me all the way through.

Excellent, with one major caveat...

Chris Boyne is truly a fantastic author, after rediscovering his work after boy in the striped pyjamas, I have fallen in love with his work all over again with his captivating and refreshing elemental series.

An absolutely captivating story of devastation and ultimately satisfaction

An unflinchingly poignant portrayal of Evan and the painful and pain-inflicting journey through part of his twenties. Some beautifully observed state-of-nation and coming of age threads throughout. Writing is peak Boyne. I listened in one sitting, straight after Water.

Brilliant
