Summary

Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library

Ruth Galloway receives a phone call that bears shocking news. A friend of hers from college, Dan Golding, has been killed in a fire at his Lancashire home. Her shock turns to alarm when she gets a letter from Dan. He has made a discovery that will change archaeology forever but he needs Ruth's advice. Even more alarming, he sounds vulnerable and frightened. DCI Harry Nelson is also rediscovering his past. Up north for a holiday, he meets his former colleague Sandy MacLeod, now at Blackpool CID. Sandy tells him there are strange circumstances surrounding Dan Golding's death. Many of those who worked with Dan seem to be afraid.

Many have secrets to hide. Ruth is drawn deep into the mystery, and where she goes, so does her toddler daughter, Kate. This time, it's not just Ruth's life at risk.

Shame about the men's voices

Good story, good narrator apart from the males voices which were awful, however stuck with it as she was on whole good and I liked the child's voice, she sounded as if she has inhaled helium beforehand.n

Unexpected

Another good story, this time not set in Norfolk. Didn't guess who did it either. Suspected a few but not the actual culprit.

Typical Elly griffiths

I do like this series of books and for the main part it was well read.. but having heard these books read by someone else I felt a bit confused because Clare Corbett is absolutely rubbish at men's voices and her rendition,of the daughter's voice sounded really scary. Poor old Nelson didn't sound remotely attractive or intelligent, nor did for that matter, did any of the men. You just didn't warm to them, they sounded quite Neanderthal . It is a shame because I have heard Clare Corbett read other books very well.
Having slated poor old Clare Corbett aside I did enjoy the book

A good solid listen

I enjoyed this story: a good solid satisfying book. It didn't blow my socks off, but a perfectly enjoyable listen.
Most importantly, for a whodunnit, it wasn't clear who did it, until we got there. The characters are good and I enjoyed the narration. I found it recapped too much for my taste - I felt like as much of the time was spent reminding me what had happened so far, as moving the story along. But maybe that's a taste thing.

Certainly, I'd recommend this book to anyone.

Another excellent book - narrator appalling...

If you can ignore the terrible narrator and her awful voices and listen to the story, it’s another excellently written story. Please return to the original narrator, she was far batter than this!

narrator not good..ghastly in places!

Good story, bad narrator, bring back original narrator! Love the Galloway series. My only fault is the vast explosion of characters that always happens mid plot, just too many competing and irrelevant characters that i zone out at times and i find i dont have a clue (nor care) about them enough to pay attention and zzzzzz, until a character i can identify comes back into play, then I'm "back in the room" as they say.

Jeez ......

How / why / wtf?!? The narrator is so bad which is such a shame and really detracts from the story. I mean it’s entertaining because it’s so bad but obviously distracting. As if Cathbad and Kate’s voices weren’t bad enough, what the actual fuck is top of the list, Clough’s accent?!? It’s pure comedy for all the wrong reasons. But at least the writing and story are as good as ever. Thank god I only have one or two left with the narrator and the rest are back to the original one. If you can I would read these ones and skip the soul deep nails on chalk board reaction every time Kate speaks.

Clare Corbett is sadly not Jane McDowell.

I found this reader’s voice grated on me. I persevered because I enjoy the Ruth Galloway stories & their characters. Sadly I see Book 6 has the same reader.

Disappointing narrator

I am working my way through the Ruth Galloway series, and generally enjoying them. However, we have now changed narrator and while Clare Corbett does a marvellous child voice, sadly only a very minor character, the voices she uses for male characters are absolutely dire. They are so irritating they detract from the whole story. I have yet to look ahead and see if she narrates others, if she does, this may mean I don’t bother…
