Summary

Everyone blamed Emily’s accident on a rubber ball left on the stairs by her frisky terrier. But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her.

On April 17th she wrote her suspicions in a letter to Hercule Poirot. Mysteriously he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th… by which time Emily was already dead…

An entertaining mystery from the 1930's

This is an excellent Agatha Christie novel, with Hercule Poirot as the investigator of a possible murder. The story flows so well that it illustrates why the author was so successful. It is a story set in the late 1920's or early 1930’s ( I think) with all of the sensibilities of that era. There were many red herrings, so I did not predict the solution, but the explanation made sense and was therefore completely satisfying. The narration, by High Fraser, was good and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the novel.

A cracking detective novel

Perfect for a long journey on a winter's day, Dumb Witness makes the time fly. Bob, the 'dumb witness' of the title, made a far better detective than I did and I needed Hercule's elegant expose at the end to let me into the secret of 'who dunnit'! Most enjoyable.

Dumb Witness

As I have already said High Fraser reads these Agatha Christie books so well. He is very funny as upper middle class ladies. He makes Poirot sound charming so that one can escape any TV images. Great fun.

Engaging story

Hugh Fraser is amazing at reading these stories and he gets Poirot perfectly. Kept me guessing until very near the end. Very enjoyable bedtime listen.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I really enjoyed this audio book. As ever, Hugh Fraser provides an outstanding performance and acts out all the parts with incredible skill and versatility. Rather spooky at times and I loved Bob.
( no spoilers!)

Dame Agatha takes us on a fantastic journey with such ease, I wanted to listen to it in one go but would have meant a few "duvet days"!

Outstanding thriller, exceptionally delivered.

Enjoy....

Dumb Witness

A fragile lady has her family down for Easter, while they were there she fell down the stairs or did she? Poor Bob the dog gets the blame.
The shock comes after a couple of weeks when she dies and the will is read and then Poriot received a letter two months after she'd died begging for his help

A mystery waiting to be solved

A house full of suspects and plenty of means and motives. Agatha Christie has done it again. Poirot, after receiving a delayed letter, continues to investigate a considered natural death of an old lady who believes someone was trying to kill her. Well worth a credit.

Tedius, slow, repetitive, too long.

Having recently viewed the TV adaptation I decided to listen to the audio version. Normally, I prefer the book, but on this occasion I can understand the reason for the changes made in the TV adaptation: the story needed to be livened up; it was so boring. During the first few chapters I was on the verge of giving up; it felt as if nothing was ever going to happen. There were too many characters, some of whom added little to the plot. Several of the characters were over the top horrible or just plain weird. The only really good character was Bob the dog and even he was portrayed better on TV. As usual, Hugh Fraser was good at being Hastings, reasonable at being Poirot, and awful at being everyone else, especially the women. The denoument was good. I recommend listening whilst engaged in some kind of physical activity; otherwise there is a possibility of being lulled to sleep. Useful bedtime listening.

Another cosy classic

Comforting and engaging as always, both story and narrator. Another great poirot escapade and an impeccable voice performance.
