Summary
The party celebrating Lainie Lovett’s father-in-law’s birthday gets exciting pretty quickly when one of the guests keels over just as the magnificent golf-themed birthday cake is being served. That he happens to be the most obnoxious guest at the shindig leaves the other guests less than shattered by his sudden passing. But when it’s determined that he didn’t die of natural causes, and a few of the guests, including the guest of honor himself, arouse suspicion, Lainie’s in-laws ask her to step in and clear her father-in-law’s name.
Meanwhile, Lainie’s daughter Karen, who has fallen madly in love with one of the waiters also under suspicion, needs Lainie to exonerate him, as well. In honor of her husband’s memory, her daughter’s love life, and that spectacular birthday cake, with its chocolate golf balls and candy clubs, Lainie must figure out who murdered the party guest - while trying to avoid getting clubbed, herself.

I enjoyed this book. This is book three in this fun kicking mystery series and although I did enjoy it isn't the best in the series, as I think it lacked some of the previous humour. What I did like was the way Lainie used her footballing skills to take down the killer, score. The characters are great and the victim was just the type of guy everybody loves to hate. The party has been mentioned a few times in previous books, so it was nice to finally have the big event and catch up with the characters we have previously met, even if it didn't to go plan. The mystery had plenty of suspects to keep you guessing and the author throws a couple of curve balls at you as well. I can't wait to start the next book to see what the author has in store for Lainie next.
The big event everybody has been talking about, well Lainie's mother in law, has finally arrived. The party guest for her father in laws birthday are made of family, friends, colleagues and other and Lainie tries her best to avoid a certain obnoxious and loud lawyer who everybody wishes hadn't been invited. Karen, Lainie's daughter isn't so lucky and the man has a heart attack and falls into her dessert. The party atmosphere continues until the police start taking guests down to the station for questioning, including Lainie 's father in law and daughter. It seems the birthday cake was poisoned but as he was the only victim the police think it was a targeted attack and as the cake design was the worst kept secret in the world everybody had the opportunity to do it. Having been cleared of murder herself Lainie's mother in law turns to her for help in finding the killer. Can she find the killer and save her daughter's heart? as Karen falls madly in love with another one of the many suspects.
I really like the choice of narrator for this series. She does such a good job with the voices that it was a pleasure to listen to.
