About this listen

The passions aroused by canine competition can inspire violent fantasies. But when a talented handler falls flat on her face during the obedience trials, Australian Shepherd lover Janet MacPhail can hardly believe someone would actually resort to murder.

As she takes care of her mother and falls for a hunky black Lab owner, the last thing Janet needs is to find out she's become a "person of interest." Nosing around for clues that might clear her good name, Janet and her friends - Australian Shepherd Jay, tabby cat Leo, and eccentric neighbor Goldie Sunshine - discover the hard way that killers don't like snoops. And it soon becomes apparent that the next victim might just be Janet herself.

Editor reviews

Drop Dead on Recall, the first book of Sheila Webster Boneham’s new Animals in Focus mystery series, is a fun, fast-paced murder mystery set in the surprisingly intrigue-filled world of competitive dog showing - a sure-fire win for any animal-loving mystery buffs out there!

Janet MacPhail, the main character of the work, is made eminently relatable by the performance of actor Erin Mallon, whose charming reading makes it easy to root for the heroine of this engaging audiobook. Mallon guides listeners deftly through Janet’s life, from the concerns of tending to her ailing mother, to a budding romance with a handsome dog handler, and right through to a murder case in which Janet may be a suspected killer...or even the next one killed.

I am usually a bit wary of American narrators. I reduced the speed to 7 and loved this voice. It was a clever fast moving story and Janet was very likeable.

Had I have got this as a freebie, I would have been quite pleased with the easy going, cosy mystery theme with a hint of romantic interest. I thought about returning it for a refund, but plodded along with it. I was surprised at the amount of bodies the local police had to cope with and the hugely irritating way our 'heroine' kept leaving her cat and dog unattended when their kidnap was so clearly on the cards. Very poor suspense building in the denouement (somebody please let the dog in!).
