She could imagine the headlines all too well. . . DEATH ON POSSETT ISLAND: Well-known Playwright Found Dead on Christmas Tree.

Dimpson McCabe - Dimpsie - has invited his closest friends of the theatre world to join him for Christmas at his castle on a private island some hours' drive from Edinburgh. The festivities have barely begun when Dimpsie is found draped atop the Christmas tree, electrocuted by the lights. It's labelled Accidental Death, but in the swirling snow suspicion is dancing among the flakes. Through Dimpsie's cadre of directors, producers, actors and agents runs a hot streak of hidden grievances and theatrical scheming, and upon return to London the dogged Inspector Smith begins to circle, seeking to find the leading man or prima donna responsible.

First published in 1948 and lost for over 75 years, this Christmas novel returns to bedazzle a fresh audience of mystery-lovers.

I normally love these classic novels but this one was too far removed from everyday reality and plausibility. There were too many indistinguishable characters and the red herrings were too obvious. It was relatively clear whodunnit fairly early but the reasons made it feel that I had been listening to two different stories.

Too many characters

I loved this book & wish there were more of hers available. The idea of an island murder with such a plot was ingenious. 😻

Definitely a lost Masterpiece

It’s an entertaining story and well read. The narrator is great with accents ( without overdoing them to a point of ridicule) and brings the different characters to life.
I think the story is a bit unpolished. It’s easy to spot the murderer and motive from early on and at times the characters seem to act out of line. Yet, it was still an interesting listen.
I wish the author would have been more consistent with her writing, because it’s quite clear that she had a lot of potential.

Amusing

Narrator did a great job with different voices, but the story wasn’t all that good. Too many characters who were underdeveloped and therefore confusing to keep track of, and the murderer/reasons were revealed/made obvious way too early. Also felt uncomfortable to refer several times to one character as ‘a Jew’.

Not recommended despite the good narrator

Unfortunately chapter 10 was missing… it skipped from chapter 9 to chapter 11. I went backwards and forwards a few times to check and even went look at the hard copy of the book I had.
It was a shame because the story and performance were brilliant.

The case of the missing chapter!
