Story
Merl is possibly the worst shepherd in Morgan Mount. He’s easily distracted. You see, Merl can see things that other folks in his village cannot...like letters over their heads. His best friend, Billy Muckspreader, has NPC. Except Merl doesn’t know what it spells, because Merl can’t read. But that’s not Merl’s only distraction. Buildings have even more letters over them, and he thinks they have numbers too. If he stares at a tree long enough, a golden plaque appears with all sorts of unintelligible nonsense on it.

Summary
Build your kingdom - Destroy your enemies
What would you do if you woke up in a strange land?
What if you had no idea why?
Would you fight, or would you curl up into a ball and cry?
What if your fate was sealed by a booming announcement that cracked across the vast blue skies?
“Greetings, welcome to The Land of The Lessermen. You have arrived in the nick of time. War looms, its dire thunderheads crowding our once glorious sky. This land needs a strong hand such as yours. A hundred must battle for victory, and at the end, there can be only one.”
You’ve played the games, now listen to the book!
For Connor O’Grady this nightmare comes true. He wakes in a land and is propelled into an age called Legendary, where he has to fight his way up from nothing, literally nothing, not even a pair of pants. He must learn to survive, to fight, and to enlist the help of others in order to build a civilization capable of winning.
Because there is no other option.
This is a LitRPG - Civ building fantasy tale and includes progression stats and settlement stats.
For lovers of 4X strategy MMORPG civilization building games who enjoy a tale woven in the lands they spend far too much time in.

Great start to a great series. They say power is blinding, it isn't wrong in this case. Romantic allure aplenty, monsters, catacombs and even the potential for dragons, all topped by the twist of a unicorn.

This one has it all!
They were stolen from Earth, placed onto a new world, and told to rebuild an ancient civilization. Do it quickly, because there are 100 other people trying to do the same, and only one can win! This book follows Conner for the first 30 days of a civ building competition, while he assembles a team and prepares his stronghold.
And it was SO MUCH FUN!
I am amazed at Ember Lane’s ability to balance all the different elements of this book. The adventures had plenty of action. There were mobs, monsters, bandits, arena fights, undead, and even a mutant unicorn! The civ building was fun to follow and exciting to see what would come next. It was mixed in with questing so that I never forgot about it, but I was never stuck counting logs before the story could progress. The stats were plentiful but only gave what was applicable to that part of the story and were voiced in the perfect way to keep my attention. And even with all of that I still had time to enjoy getting to know the characters, who were fun, surprising at times, and genuinely likable.
I will say the beginning felt a bit forced. I was a little worried until the MC started collecting his party. Then things smoothed out quickly. Another minor complaint could be that some characters fit too squarely into their stereotypes. But other than a quick eye roll, it didn’t distract me from a very fun story.
Pavi Proczko’s narration was equally impressive. He did a fantastic job reading a large cast of characters with fitting and recognizable voices for each. That was an easy 5 stars.
In a genre overwhelmed by 7-10 hour long books, this 20+ hour book should be an easy sell. I give it 5 stars across the board and recommend it to anyone with an interest in GameLit fantasy.

Tastes like cardboard
I made it three hours into this book before I realized that I didn’t care. I didn’t care about the lifeless characters, the flat story, or the trope filled world. I mean come on, there hasn’t been a single redeeming quality that I cant think of. It’s a bland book narrated blandly for a bland audience who just want background noise. This is one of Pavi’s worse narrations, but honestly I think it really is just the book.

Worthy LitRPG Entrant. Power Fantasy, Some Issues.
There's a lot to like about this book, if you're attracted to the LitRPG cultivation genre. The story path here is that the author's decided to cross a LitRPG system with mobile game tropes - specifically, the type of kingdom building / battling MMOs that are so common (and that I avoid like the plague).
There are things that I liked:
1. The story's based in part on explorations and reveals, with action. There are reasons for curiosity.
2. The litRPG system that's built is understandable, reasonable, and interesting.
3. It's not badly written - we get pretty good descriptions, reasonable banter, and such.
4. Character personalities do become distinct, and have some potential for growth.
5. It's light-hearted and pleasant enough.
This made me cringe:
That which some persons called the pseudo-harem: this protagonist has a tendency to run up and kiss women full on the lips when trying to express thanks to them, for some females (all attractive) to kiss the protagonist within 1 minute of meeting him, and for no one to express or feel any issue with this whatsoever.
Note: I wrote the above prior to listening to book 2. I'm happy to report that within that book the pseudo-harem appears to have been dissolved.
These things irked me:
1, We have another book that treats binge-drinking as the celebration of choice (rather than social drinking)
2. We do have a story with the chosen-one trope. The protagonist gains most of the power among his companions, with a massive boost by the end of the book.
3. There's no real sign that we're going to get anything deeper than a reckless good vs demonic, mutated evil story.
Let me revisit character development, to clarify. What I do get, I like. But while this book does signal that there's a growth paths for each character (which could turn into story arcs), there' s no real reason to think that the focus will ever leave the protagonist, and no reason to think that these paths will lead towards depth. But... hope springs eternal. Book 2 could improve?
I've liked the story enough to finish it over a couple of days, but to my eye things turned a bit munchkin-like at the end.
I liked it enough that I'll give Book 2 a try.

Thoughtful and Engaging LitRPG
I am a fan of Ember Lane from the Barrakdor books, but this series starter blows those out of the water. The characters are interesting, the narration quite well done and the story is fast-paced, but without feeling rushed. The especially interesting part, in my opinion, is that when establishing a new land and culture, the story and characters address not only the logistics, but also the social and religious aspects that go into creating a unified land and culture. Looking very forward to the rest of this series!

A decent story
I unfortunately can't give this story high marks like I would have liked to. Though an enjoyable story it has many issues that caused conflict with me.
Scene transitions were harsh and abrupt making the story hard to follow at many times.
Continuity story errors stuck out to me. Like the 17 quest reward said being given twice. And the wyvern armor said to have 6 pieces, but Connor only equipping 5 pieces to complete the set. Or chapter end evaluator talking about new armor Connor acquired then ending his report saying no new armor acquired.
The game mechanics are weak and basic lacking hardly any creativity. Some more thought and creativity within the mechanics would have been nice.
Finally Connor never seems to have to work to hard for stuff. Every where he goes with only a little effort he is lavished with top tier rewards. I feel the Author needs to work some more on the journey of the story and less on the over powered rewards.
For vocals the voice artist has a great deep voice that he can flex magnificently for many male voices. Unfortunately his greatest gift is also his greatest hindrance with female voices. He should get a partner to work with to cover that side.

Fantastic. If you’re into the genre then buy it.
This is a great addition to the LitRPG genre. It’s well written, imaginative, and engaging. The idea of taking the 4x template and fleshing it out into a real story could have been a disaster, but Ember Lane does a masterful job of setting up the story and an even better job at making the town building relevant without boring us to death with detailing every single decision and upgrade.
In fact the only thing in this book I can criticize is the narrator. Though on the whole Pavi Proczko’s performance was pretty good (and much better than some of his performances of other audiobooks), he still has a glaring flaw that at this point might be considered a signature part of his style... And that is to repeatedly mispronounce any word that is even slightly outside of everyday vocabulary.
He does this in every one of his performances that I’ve listened to... which makes me think that either his friends and family never listen to his work, or none of them are native English speakers. Because anyone who cares about him should have by now taught him how to use the pronunciation key in a dictionary. Honestly it’s embarrassing. Has no one mentioned this to him over the several years he’s been a narrator?
Dude, up your game... if you see a word in a book that you don’t recognize then look it up for gods sake! Hooked on Phonics is all good, but you’re actually being paid to read books for a living. Maybe invest in yourself and your career, because it’s frustrating to listen to you half-ass your way through yet another audiobook.
Otherwise this book was a “buy it” all the way, and really when it comes down to it, in spite of my irritation, the mispronunciations don’t detract enough from the experience to mitigate that fact.

It’s an ok story but ...
All honesty the author just rambles on and on when he could use a single word.
Example: author could just say “ he hesitated at the entrance”. Instead you get “he looked at the door study each grain of wood unsure of if he should go forward or stop and go back. He realizes he has help if he walks backbut is unsure even though he knows if he does he will lose everything “ ansd on and on over and over again throughout the book ... it makes me skip alot
