Summary
The enigmatic army officer Captain JAC Smethwick is a veteran of the The Charge of the Light Brigade. But when he visits Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson he has more on his mind than the conflict in the Crimea. There is a mystery surrounding the death of his former employer, Lord Cardigan. Smethwick believes that the man responsible for his death is none other than the former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.
Holmes sends Watson off to Deene Park, Lord Cardigan's estate, to investigate and question the victim's widow - the colourful and flirtatious Adeline de Horsey. But Watson starts to uncover an altogether more sinister and complex conspiracy. And rather than unmask the murderer, Watson may become his next victim. The game's afoot - but who is the hunter and who will be the prey?
Patrick Mercer is author of the Doctor Watson series, as well as Men of Honour. A military historian by training, he was decorated four times as an infantry officer and then was the defence correspondent for BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.

Not for authentic Holmes fans
There are plenty of lively new stories which draw on the Sherlock Holmes canon, but this is not a fine example. It starts with Watson swearing, which he never does anywhere in the books and is out of character for so prudish a man - and continues in the same vein, using Holmes and Watson as ciphers rather than continuing the characters which Conan Doyle developed.

Different, but enjoyable, take on Watson and Holme
Initially, I wasn't sure what to expect, but ended up enjoying the quaint and self-contained tale of a detective story given from the point of view of Watson, and allowing for a slightly tongue in cheek look at the great sleuth and his typical methods. The story doesn't bring too many surprises, but it carries the listener along with a reasonable pace, and satisfactory conclusion. Die hard Holmes fans may find it slightly strays too far from the familiar Sherlock pattern, but anyone who enjoys Holmes as part of a wider interest in detective fiction, will likely enjoy this easygoing tale.

Watson and Holmes but not as we know them
I think this would’ve worked much better if Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, I’d of been completely left out of it. The whole problem is you’re thinking Watson would never say or do that, and it’s the same with Holmes. If the author had gone with an original detective of his own, I think it would’ve worked a lot better. Not for me.

Definitely NOT for Sherlock Holmes fans
Story is very poor.
Reader’s characterisations are very poor.
If you are an SH fan or, even if you’ve read 1 SH short story, you will NOT enjoy this.

It was ok but not gripping.
I had just finished a series of books on SH, not by ACD set in the USA, which were rather good. This one didn’t quite reach that level for me. Narration was OK.

Love Sherlock and Watson stories.
Sadly, I found this version difficult to both follow and understand at times. Subsequently, I have rated it only 2 stars, and am sorry to do so. However I would urge others to give it a go, as often different experiences can be the case.
