Summary

A nightmare discovery in the boot of a stolen BMW plunges car thief Danny Stapleton into the worst trouble of his life. What links his misfortune to the mysterious disappearance of an art teacher at a private school for girls in Chichester? Critic reviews

"In his lengthy career, veteran novelist Peter Lovesey has supplied the most diverting (and elegantly written) crime fiction." ( Good Book Guide)
"Diamond is a wonderfully rounded character whose lines are witty and whose observations about people's characters and motives are brilliantly insightful. Vintage Diamond mystery, spiced by his comic encounters with his supervisor: a must for devotees of character-driven British crime fiction." ( Booklist)

Good old fashioned whodunit

What did you like most about Down Among the Dead Men?

It flows nicely and is fun.

What other book might you compare Down Among the Dead Men to, and why?

Strangely enough any Agatha Christie. But don't be put off. It is up to date with lots of characters and intrigue.

What does Michael Tudor Barnes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Humour. His narration is so skillful and you cannot help but feel the relationships or not!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Peter Diamond, today's Hercule Poirot.

Brilliant!

A well written and woven story. The humour is well placed and dry (do snails pray?!!). Excellently read by Michael Tudor Barnes who brings each character alive and kicking into the imagination To understand some of the storylines and character motives it would be best to start listening with the first book in the series but ... you could give it a go without!

Georgy Girl

Diamond's worse nightmare could be working as an investigative team with his boss Georgina. When it happens they are sent to review the conduct of a police officer in West Sussex accused of misconduct. Diamond has to manipulate his boss, tiptoe around the hostile local force and try to clean the suspended officer whom he knows from a previous investigation involving the two police forces.

Sticky, tricky and difficult not to be on his patch but also because the picture is bigger than it first appears. Diamond has to show he is right to expand his investigation while trying to expose a much bigger racket; no easy task but Diamond is as tenacious as a bulldog.

I found it enjoyable to see Diamond off his usual patch and working without a buffer between him and Georgina.

An original mystery in an unusual setting

A great plot, bringing various strands together ingeniously. Many varied and fascininating characters with natural-sounding dialogue.

Well read kept you guessing all the way through. Within minutes of starting it I just couldn't stop listening. This was my first Peter Lovesey novel, but it won't be my last.

Excellent!

This one was great fun despite the disturbing plot being gradually uncovered. Intriguing storyline and interesting relationship with the ACC being developed.

Favourite narrator

I listen and read switching between audible and kindle. Having read all of them up to this point Michael Tudor Barnes is assuredly MY Peter Diamond. He captures the avuncular personality perfectly and has just the trace of a local accent (as a Somerset born person I’m fussy). So I’m sorry to see that he is not narrating the next in the series and hope he will return!

Excellent!

Very clever intertwining of a number of different parts of the novel. If you're a Peter Diamond addict this is one of the best

Really enjoyable

Read this far too quickly - but it is really gripping. Would highly recommend. And excellently read - as ever - by Michael Tudor Barnes - think he must be one of the best narrators going.

Loved it!!!
