Summary

The doughnut is a thing of beauty, a circle of fried, doughy perfection - a source of comfort in trying times, perhaps. For Theo Bernstein it is far, far more. An accident at work lost Theo his job (and his work involved preventing a Very, Very Large Hadron Collider from blowing up, so he's unlikely to get it back).

His wife has left him; he doesn't have any money; and news arrives that his good friend, Professor Pieter van Goyen, renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, has died. By leaving the apparently worthless contents of his safety deposit to Theo, however, the professor has sent him on a quest of epic proportions. A journey that will rewrite the laws of physics. A battle to save humanity itself.

This is the tale of a man who had nothing and gave it all up to find his destiny - and a doughnut.

Doughnut

I am a big Tom Holt fan, I love Barking, Blonde Bombshell and, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Sausages, they are all great 5* books.

So I was thrilled to download his new book Doughnut. And I really enjoyed most of this book. It is even more strange than his other books, and even more mad. And I felt the end was just too crazy. But then a book about a infinite number of universes in the multiverse should be crazy.

Still a very enjoyable listen.

Totally mad - but ultimately enjoyable

A great reading of a thoroughly looney book that is so mad, its almost plausible.

Found it hard to get through

I liked the plot and found it to be a quirky fictional tale. Not the best I've listened to though.. I didn't find myself being engaged or invested, the characters were a bit flat and uninteresting. Still, it got a few laughs out of me and I think my issues are largely subjective. I could see my friends enjoying it.

Ray Sawyer's performance is technically fine and he's well spoken, I just personally found it hard to get through. His voice was lulling me to sleep constantly so my concentration dipped and I had to repeat parts often to make sense of them.

Would recommend if you like quirky silly fiction delivered in a dulcet English voice.

Enjoyably different

This was my first Tom Holt book so I’d no idea what to expect nor did I have any preconceived ideas or past works to compare it with.

If you like fiction that surprises you, baffles you at times, and is totally unpredictable, this might be for you. If you like a good traditional yarn with a start middle and end, that follows some kind of normal genre, maybe skip this one!

For me, I enjoyed it. It’s almost a philosophical sci-fi with hints of Prachett at times. It’s unlike anything I’ve read before. I listen to help me fall asleep at night and this would do it within minutes! But I eventually got to the end and can say I enjoyed it.

I’ll give another book by Tom Holt a try next.

Need to take another bite of this Doughnut...

I love Ray Sawyer's narration as much as Tom Holt's humour - dry. I'm having trouble getting to grips with this story, however. It's a great idea, but I'm not gripped. Will try again.

doughnut miss this one

What did you like most about Doughnut?

A typical Holt-ian story that takes what you know and twists it through 28 degrees to make you look at the world in a different way. The possibilities that this book opens up will keep you thinking. And then you'll want a doughnut.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Theo grows throughout the story from a character that has lost everything but never gives up, to a pawn in someone elses game to heights even he could never imagine. You stay on his side as he grows and discovers what is shaping his destiny

What about Ray Sawyer’s performance did you like?

The voice characterisations.are superb and paint a picture of the main players in your mind's eye with precision

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was moved by the ending; no spoilers!

Any additional comments?

A great story that takes you in unexpected dimensions

Amusing and a fun listen.

The narrator is great and the story is funny if a little bit odd

intresting

you really have to think about this one, there are lots of twists, just when you think you've got the hang of it off it goes again. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
