Summary

When Sir Charles Airdrie, owner of Dreams Castle in the Scottish Highlands, gives young Vernon Lathaby - a flamboyant young exhibitionist - permission to search the Isle of Erran for buried treasure, Lathaby takes along his tough hanger-on, ‘Digger Henderson’. However, cautious of being swindled by his partner, Lathaby takes out insurance to protect him, so Miles Bredon is dispatched by the suspicious Incredible Insurance Company to keep a watchful eye on proceedings.

The most typical mystery from Knox

Knox other mystery stories are all deconstructions or satires of the genre, but in this, his last work, he decided to play it strait. It definitely feels like a send-off to the series with many recurring characters. Like a good mystery, it felt really simple when I knew what happened and felt dumb for not figuring it out earlier, but I felt totally lost until it was revealed to me. There's a lot of clues and it follows fair play rules so you can figure it out. Sadly the story felt too stretched out and may have had too large a cast for it's own good so it's one of my least favorite of his books, it's still a good mystery though.
