Summary
From the best-selling author of The Daughter and White Lies comes an enthralling psychological thriller unlike anything you’ve heard before!
Never make a promise you can’t afford to keep....
This is a story about Charlotte - a mother and a wife with the perfect job, the perfect life...at least, that’s how it looks from the outside.
But behind closed doors, the marriage is breaking, and Charlotte’s husband, Tris, doesn’t even know how much. He has no idea what Charlotte has planned for him, who she has found, why she has hired someone to pretend to be her. But he doesn’t have long to wait to find out....

Another Cracking Good Book from Lucy Dawson
Charlotte is struggling as a thriller writer, it seems that her best years as a writer may be behind her. The best years of her marriage to Tris may lie in the past as well.
Then Charlotte bumps into an actress called Mia at the Edinburgh book festival. Mia has a striking resemblance to Charlotte, only she is 20 years younger. Charlotte is inspired by a plan to boost her flagging career - a plan which promises to lead to a multi-million pound book deal. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I was totally hooked by this book. The quality of the writing by Lucy Dawson had me totally gripped, I felt I was there as the plot took its twists and turns. At about the 8 hour mark, it felt like everything was just about wrapped up, then off the story went again on a new tack. I couldn't wait to see where we were being taken.
Lots of good stuff around family relationships, parents, adopted children, grandparents, ex-fiances etc.
Quite a satisfying ending I thought...except what happened about the contractual commitment for the second book? That was a loose end I was waiting to have resolved but it never was. It had the potential to be somebody's downfall.

Honest review, and fantastic book.
This was the second book I have listened to by Lucy Dawson, I downloaded it the instant I finished listening to The Memory.
This story is so different, but just as well written. I listened to it almost non-stop.
I honestly recommend it to anyone who loves books with many plot twists, that really do keep u guessing until the end.
I sadly don't always take the time to write reviews, unless, as with this book, I want to tell everyone to read it, I have my next book hers downloading as I type.

Enjoyable, clever, well plotted and entertaining thriller
OK this is a wee bit chick lit but nonetheless enjoyable for that. I thought it was very
well thought out and cleverly plotted to make it an audio page turner. The narrators are very good and it worked well as two hander. It kept my interest throughout. I enjoyed and could visualise the characters and there was a skilful subversion of thriller writing tropes that was almost black comedy in parts. The author also uses language well and that is a welcome attribute these days.

Very Cleverly written!!
A great idea of the author to give the main character, Charlotte, such a good idea!!
Both of the main characters (Charlotte and MIa) were quite likeable, but I never really got what the relationship was between them in the end - why DID they look so alike?? Did I miss something?
It was enjoyable to listen to as I never knew quite what was going to happen and what the outcome was going to be, I don't think I could have guessed.
Both narrators were very good.
I would recommend this book

Lucy Dawson is an author I'm coming to be able to depend on to write a great thriller. It was original and fresh and after part one, there was no chance I was going to be able to put it down. I should have been asleep hours ago but it was so good that I'm up writing this review at 3:34 am. This should be a no brainer. It's worth the credit and then some.
I've listened to all her thrillers and haven't been disappointed yet. I'm already looking forward to her next release already.

Only half the book is good
The first half had me, couldn't stop listening. The second half was the scorned woman drama that went on and on and on... "Don't ever tell" turned into TELL EVERYONE and sit around and feel sorry for everyone in the entire world and give all your money away to everyone else because you are such a good honest marshmallow happy person who loves puppies and children. It was kind of nauseating. This could have been fantastic, but really fell and rolled down a steep hill of nothing.

Not really a psychological thriller
While I don't feel like I wasted a credit with this book, I can say that I'm disappointed in the plot. I though Lucy Dawson did a good job creating the characters of the two main heroines. But there was no suspense and few and predictable twists. I felt let down at the sudden end. The plot was interesting and really could have gone a number of much more interesting ways. It almost seemed that Dawson was given a word count to stay withing and narrowed the book to fit within it. It seems that critical points within the book weren't developed as they should have: what happened the memorable night at Mia's flat; innuendos about Charlotte's past from her mother-in-law, etc. I'm sure many people (as evidenced by the positive reviews) will enjoy the book. But to me, there was no mystery, no thriller, no twists, no romance, a mixed up flow, and a hurried plot. Perhaps if you like character studies, you'll enjoy the book. The narrators were very good.

Kept my attention but..
It was very entertaining and I enjoyed the narration. The last two minutes seemed like an after thought. It was just plopped in there with no real set up or explanation after the fact. I wish the author explored that “angle” more.

Wonderful imaginative plot idea that kept me fascinated and guessing what the final outcome would be until the last. Most I’ve figured out and feel disappointed that there was no surprise or ah ha moment at the end. Lucy Dawson brilliant as was the job the narrators did preforming it.

I wasted a credit
I usually love Lucy Dawson's books, but this one was too far fetched with too many coincidences. I actually wished the story would end sooner so I can move on to my next audible book. And when it did eventually end, it fell flat. The narrators also didn't do it any favours.
