Never make a promise you can’t afford to keep....

But behind closed doors, the marriage is breaking, and Charlotte’s husband, Tris, doesn’t even know how much. He has no idea what Charlotte has planned for him, who she has found, why she has hired someone to pretend to be her. But he doesn’t have long to wait to find out....

Another Cracking Good Book from Lucy Dawson

Charlotte is struggling as a thriller writer, it seems that her best years as a writer may be behind her. The best years of her marriage to Tris may lie in the past as well.

Then Charlotte bumps into an actress called Mia at the Edinburgh book festival. Mia has a striking resemblance to Charlotte, only she is 20 years younger. Charlotte is inspired by a plan to boost her flagging career - a plan which promises to lead to a multi-million pound book deal.

I was totally hooked by this book. The quality of the writing by Lucy Dawason had me totally gripped, I felt I was there as the plot took its twists and turns. At about the 8 hour mark, it felt like everything was just about wrapped up, then off the story went again on a new tack. I couldn't wait to see where we were being taken.

Lots of good stuff around family relationships, parents, adopted children, grandparents, ex-fiances etc.

Quite a satisfying ending I thought...except what happened about the contractual commitment for the second book? That was a loose end I was waiting to have resolved but it never was. It had the potential to be somebody's downfall.

Plot line reaches, twists, grasps nothing

Inconsistent characters. Plot full of holes. Writing tedious, turgid. I did not enjoy this book.

Great story with an odd ending.

Really good narration, great book but an odd ending. I couldn't believe it had ended. It was intriguing and built up to what I thought would be a nailbiter but no, it didn't deliver. A few unanswered q
uestions and a sense of beating let down.

Worth a listen

Worth a listen but nothing earth shattering. A slow build up to an interesting enough, but certainly not explosive, twist. A lot of questions seem left unanswered and some ideas are quite far fetched and unessecary, like what even was the point of them talking about Charlotte's Dads weird sub-plot which was entirely irrelevant?
All in all an easy and relatively enjoyable listen.

Dark with sprinkles of light

I loved tris as husband and dad, his love was searching. Charlotte was a bit of a mystery but nice. The plot was amazing, not predictable even when you think it’s transparent. Excellent. Now I hope to enjoy I sent you a letter by the same author.

Very good audio!

The story is easy to listen to, I love the narrator performance.
I enjoyed it and I would listen to other books of this author, although the story feels unreal and a little over the top, i listened solid for two days and my house is spotless ☺️

5 stars

Lucy Dawson is an author I'm coming to be able to depend on to write a great thriller. It was original and fresh and after part one, there was no chance I was going to be able to put it down. I should have been asleep hours ago but it was so good that I'm up writing this review at 3:34 am. This should be a no brainer. It's worth the credit and then some.

I've listened to all her thrillers and haven't been disappointed yet. I'm already looking forward to her next release already.

Really different! In a good way!

I thought I had this storyline figured out and was so surprised by about the halfway mark. Not your typical mystery at all. Very smart. Loved it!!

One of my favorite

Wonderful imaginative plot idea that kept me fascinated and guessing what the final outcome would be until the last. Most I’ve figured out and feel disappointed that there was no surprise or ah ha moment at the end. Lucy Dawson brilliant as was the job the narrators did preforming it.
Sincerely,
Reg

Really good story .. ending fell a little flat

I really enjoyed the book. Definite twists and suspense that had me verbally going "oh my goodness" or "don't do it!" while not able to guess what would happen next. I did think after all the excitement that the ending would be just as thrilling, but it was a little too logical or matter of fact for me. Still a great read.

Sometimes revenge is messy...

Lucy Dawson writes great books. In this one, she's a bit sneaky. She opens up the plot a little at a time, so while you think you know the whole story, you really don't until near the end. The lead female characters were flawed and wonderful. I felt empathy for both, but especially for Mia. Charlotte was tougher to like, but I could definitely understand her need to punish her husband. Unfortunately, one can't plan for everything when concocting a nasty bit of revenge. The narration is excellent. I have enjoyed both narrators in other books and was thrilled to hear them here. I can't wait for more releases from Ms. Dawson!

Awful book!

I paid for this book. I sent a few back so I don’t want to do it again but I’ve listened for 2 hours so far and cannot tell you at all what it’s about. I hate this dumb English accent too. I don’t think I can suffer through another minute of it!

Good, but expected a little more

Good story, but the ending was a little flat. The climax of the book was about half way through.
