Editor reviews

Gary Player was at the top of his game during golf's golden age, competing against the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Narrated with great character by voice actor Rupert Degas, Don't Choke: A Champion's Guide to Winning Under Pressure is Player's handbook to perseverance on the green. Degas exudes Player's steely, scrappy attitude when detailing his early ambition to be world champion and his later opinions on how to handle pressure and how to maintain focus. Thoughtful and inspiring, Don't Choke is a galvanizing force for anybody who wants to get ahead in golf - or life.

Summary

Gary Player is one of golf’s greatest champions. As one of the "Big Three" of golf’s golden era (with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer), he helped launch golf as a major international sport. He sits fourth on the list of most major victories on the PGA Tour and built a reputation of being fearless on the course and steely on the greens. Don’t Choke is his look at what it takes to achieve success when the pressure is on. Player explains how and why he became a champion and what it takes to win in big-time golf, but he also explains how learning to cope in pressure situations can help anyone. He will review the most pressure-packed situations in his 18 major victories and how he managed to succeed when things were most tense.

But this book is not all about golf. Player has had a long successful career in business since his playing days - designing golf courses, marketing golf equipment and sportswear, and more. If you want to do better in a boardroom or in your next job interview, Player’s advice will help. This personal glimpse into the mind of a champion offers lessons to everyone who has to face pressure - and today that is all of us.

Holy Smokes - What a FANTASTIC book!

What made the experience of listening to Don't Choke the most enjoyable?

This book is a MUST - I highly recommend it. What an amazing story and man. I bought it for the golf content but came away inspired not only about golf but about life!

What did you like best about this story?

If you have ever wondered what a Champion of golf thinks - what secrets they apply to their game - then you are in the right place. What to know how to approach the game; your opponents, or the course?? - it is all here. Not a word is wasted - it is power packed - this book is so good it deserves a second listen. Very easy to listen to and very easy to apply to your golf game - Great tips that I took to the course today. Inspiring stories that will stay with me. This book really hit a cord and Gary Player has just become a mentor of mine - Thank you Gary for sharing this valuable information - please write more!!

What does Rupert Degas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Loved the narration - was worried when I saw that Mr Player was not reading it himself but I needn't have given it a second thought - very well done.

Any additional comments?

Inspirational

Black knight wisdom at his best. No need to be a golfer to understand the message here. Never saw Gary Player playing golf, I just know him as an exceptional person that achieved many great things in life based merely in his willingness to succeed.

Thanks a lot for sharing your inspirational life story.
