Let down by narrators (Sean Barrett excepted)

I have enjoyed all Mick Herron books to date but am sadly underwhelmed by the Dolphin Junction collection. None of the characters had any real depth and there was no real plots to speak of. And the narration.....Hey ho. Roll on the next Slow Horses novel!

Poor stories , average performance

Julia Franklin really isn’t to my liking . She ruins Mick Herrons books for me . Obviously she floats other peoples boats.

Terrible narration.

I love Mick Herron books but the narration by the female reader was so terrible I had to turn it off and return the book. Truly awful. First time I've ever returned one.

Patchy!

The short stories are really a stopgap until the new Jackson Lamb novel comes out later this year, and it worked for me. The jewel is, of course, the Sean Barrett narration of the JL story which was really enjoyable.

As for the others, they are still interesting, though I agree that the narration of them was sometimes annoying and other times OK. For me it was the high-pitched excitement style, like a new puppy bouncing around, which I found most difficult. We are all so used to the wonderful tones of SB which serve to enhance the words and pleasure of any story he reads.

However, being a narrator is a not any easy task, especially when the characters are so diverse, I couldn't speak in a male voice and I assume that men trying to speak in a female voice is equally challenging.

The story lines did enough to hold my attention, and attention was needed in a couple of them to follow the plot, they are not all a light listen.

Overall - a hit!

Check you can handle the narration?

The direction for this recording must have been a bit odd: Sean Barrett is predictably good and Emma Powell is fine but the other readings are over-dramatised, with the performances getting in the way of the good writing.

Better to read the book. Maybe Audible will re record it.

Ruined by poor narrators (NOT Sean Barrett)

Mick Herron plus Sean Barrett is a dream combination for me. And there's another stand-alone Jackson Lamb story! There should be so much to enjoy here.

What a pity, therefore, that the rest of the collection should be spoiled by the other very poor narrators: sing-song, mannered little-girl voices, a slow male voice making interesting lines dull.

Narrators, listen and learn from the peerless Sean B!

I can't imagine who at Audble is choosing and allowing these recordings.

Extremely variable and largely disappointing

Generally good narration excepting the voice adopted for one of the main protagonists in the story “What we do” which renders it virtually unlistenable.

Save your money/credit and buy something else.

Narrator gets in the way

i devour Mick Herron's books, but never before on audible. The narrator, while suffering blocked sinuces, attacks each syllable with relish and Dick Van Dyke level accents. It all gets in the way of the story.

Truly awful narration... except Sean Barrett!

I am a huge fan of Mick Herron. The stories in this collection are very enjoyable, however the entire book is let down by the poor narration. It's almost most unbearable and if it had been any other author I would have given up.

The exception of course is Sean Barrett... I would be perfectly content to listen to him reading the phone book.
