Summary

Highly sensitive people - or empaths - see life through the eyes of compassion and caring. They were born that way. As a result, they carry a tremendous amount of inner light. But they’re also the favored prey of “vampires” who feed off empaths’ energy and disrupt their lives on every level - physical, emotional, and financial.

In Dodging Energy Vampires, Christiane Northrup, MD, draws on the latest research in this exciting new field, along with stories from her global community and her own life, to explore the phenomenon of energy vampires and show us how we can spot them, dodge their tactics, and take back our own energy. You’ll delve into the dynamics of vampire-empath relationships and discover how vampires use others’ energy to fuel their own dysfunctional lives. Once you recognize the patterns of behavior that mark these relationships, you’ll be empowered to identify the vampires in your life too.

In this audiobook, Dr. Northrup opens up a toolbox full of techniques you can use to leave these harmful relationships behind; heal from the darkness they’ve cast over your mind, body, and spirit; and let your own light shine. In the end, you may find yourself healthier, happier, wealthier, and more vibrant than you ever believed possible.

not about freeing yourself from toxic people

the author talks at length about empaths - how they are supernatural in ways - that they even have the ability to turn off light bulbs with their energy or mess up technological devices.
I wanted a book on how to avoid and deal with toxic people - this is not it.

A very empowering book

As an empath I found this book incredibly enlightening and empowering, even life changing.
For me it explained so much that I have struggled with since very early childhood. Providing constructive ways to deal and then be able to move forward with a new empowered life.
Christine as narrator and author gives a very well rounded insight into this deep subject. I going to read More of her books and investigate her web sight. For me her evaluation resonated very well.
Highly recommended.
Thank you Christine. 😀

What did I just listen to?

I was expecting for a psychology book about toxic people. What I got was a "ding dong" lady talking about her past life memories, children who can see dead pets near their owners and communication with angels. Those are not figures of speech neither I am exaggerating - she literally claims these things. What angers me the most that from the description it seems like a psychology book and there are no hints about author's "alternative believes".

I couldn't finish chapter 2. I'm science trained and believe in logic. This book was never going to be for me.

Not what its advertised as

I thought this was an advice book about the psychology of people who are sensitive and the people who take advantage of them.
I did not expect to hear an MD talking about astrology and reincarnation.
Her unfounded assertions are given unfair weight by her unrelated qualification and appear very early in the book and turned me off it.
I also could not overcome the gender-bias, despite my best efforts to hear past her female-oriented writing. Perhaps I'm simply too sensitive.

A strange mix

There is an interesting book in here somewhere, that goes deep into the way the body reacts to the brain and how abusive relationships and cults affect your health, but it's hidden behind the author's own belief system, which she frequently goes into tangents about and I personally find quite off-putting. The author's rejection of conventional medicine and the scientific method casts doubt on the things she says, and I find myself wondering whether she has grouped perfectly normal people into the 'energy vampire' group she describes. Certainly the description of 'empaths' appears to apply to literally everyone I know, even if the levels vary. It's a pity this way of thinking can't be combined with some more factual parts to give a balanced, well researched view on health.

Amazing

Absolutely loved this book, more so that the audio was read by Dr Northrup. I have followed Dr Northrup's work since I heard her lecture at the Empowering Women Conference with Louise Hay. This is a wonderful, insightful and humble offering of Dr Northrup's own learning, wisdom and growth, she speaks powerfully about how each one of us can empower our Selves in day to day life. There are a number of very clear exercises and guidelines to empower and cut out deadwood from our lives. Highly recommended and definitely worth another listen.

Fantastic information

I wish I had found this book years ago. It would have saved me a lot of heart ache. If you keep getting into relationships and friendships that suck the life out of you then leave you damaged, this explains why! I knew I was an empath but never knew this is why I keep letting people take advantage of me. I have listened through three times already and will do so again! I’d love to talk to the author in person! I’d ask her how do I cope with competing my horse when I go to shows and everyone is nervous and I can pick it up like a sponge. Off to find more books by this author now!

Irritating

This book is grating. The narrator is very good but the story here is of someone overly sensitive and this !are her a nervous wreck. I felt when I got the book.that I agreed some.people you love it work with are emotionally exhausting, draining you until you aren't yourself. But by about halfway this core message in the book.got too repetitive . It became too hard to explain away some.of.the authors.own views about the reasons for.The fragility.of.her psyche. But it does.help.to be mindful of the struggles of others

I Wish She Had Written This Book Years Ago

What made the experience of listening to Dodging Energy Vampires the most enjoyable?

It really helped me understand even more who are the Energy Vampires in my life -- past and present -- and how to deal with them.

What other book might you compare Dodging Energy Vampires to and why?

The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists. My parents, first husband, many boyfriends and friends, employees and business partners have all been narcissists who -- to me -- are the same as energy vampires. Listening to the descriptions of relationships involving this type of person helps me to identify and understand why I was attracted to these people and why I need to stay away.

What about Christiane Northrup MD’s performance did you like?

She has a very friendly, relaxed way of reading with emphasis in all the right places.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When she talked about women who had been in 20+ year marriages with energy vampires, why they stayed and how they got away. It helped me to identify with my own first marriage and not feel so bad about how long it took me to leave.

Accessible Psychology and Spirituality

Christiane Northrup has been a leading figure on women's health issues and spiritual correlations. Here she steps into the world of psychology. I have identified as an Empath for some time, but don't let that dissuade readers/listeners who don't embrace this spiritual label. The fact is that anyone who is *empathic* will get the drift. This book has tools for dealing with those narcissistic users and manipulators we sometimes cater to (and then punish ourselves, asking what we're doing wrong). Better though, this book offers tools to own your role in it and separate from these toxic people. I've recommended this book to some of my clients and been met with a lot of gratitude.

phenomenal

So nice to finally read a book written for those of us marginalized to the woo-woo lands. I love the examination of the spiritual practices from a scientific viewpoint. There is no one without the other.

Compelling -No -Nonsense -Inspiration

This book tackles subtleties and explicit issues that empathic people face in a solid, reliable narrative. It’s inspiring to hear someone like Dr. Northrup whose medical point of view is amplified with her personal experiences and healing. I will listen to this again and again.

Incredibly Honest and Insightful

I have read many books and had no idea who the author was or what they believed. Most contribute superficial thinking, but this book gives you insight into the essence of her being. I think it is daringly honest and it is an instrument of change. As an empath living in a world that can be so out of focus and noisy, here is a clear channel. No static , just an old soul telling it very bravely.

Good ideas from an odd perspective

I liked the advice in this book, but I struggled with a lot of the metaphysical basis for which it sprung. I do also feel that this book gives and adequate introduction to this topic. I’m now more ready to connect and empathize with people who believe that healing comes from magic powers. Another critique I have is in the wide web that is cast for diagnosing narcissism.

Blurring of facts vs. author’s spiritual beliefs

In an era where only 25% of Americans can accurately identify fact vs. opinion, I was troubled by the amount of information which was presented as a simple declarative statements, giving the illusion that all these ideas were indeed facts. As the author is trained in traditional medicine, the casual listener could indeed easily misconstrue her medical authority as lending credence or some kind of scientific basis to many of her thoughts. In fact much of the information was not based on any kind of currently supported scientific data. Rather she is sharing her thoughts, opinions, spiritual beliefs, and a few perhaps as yet unproven scientific ideas. For instance, she says, “The thymus gland is where divine love first enters the body.” That’s it...a simple declarative, seemingly factual statement. She quickly moves on to her larger point, slipping one past a less than critical thinker. Those kinds of passages gave me immediate “stink eye.” Who says? What evidence? What data? I would have had far greater respect for the thought had she instead said something like...I believe, and spiritual leaders working in this arena believe, the thymus gland is where divine love first enters the body. A few words at the beginning would have clarified a deeply held personal belief vs intentionally misleading the reader into thinking she’s presenting a simple fact. That deceptive technique was used over and over again, and I was having none of it. It felt disingenuous.

Having said that, the mind is a powerful thing, and she has presented a construct which many will find useful. This is new age spiritual thinking wrapped in the thin veneer of traditional medicine as seen from the perspective of a traditionally trained doctor searching for deeper spiritual answers as she herself has evolved as a person. Some of her ideas will probably eventually bear fruit among mainstream psychologists and may change how we routinely approach some treatments. That’s yet to be seen though.

Ultimately, I was so put off by the misuse of her medical authority in presenting spiritual beliefs as medical facts that I found myself discounting ideas that I know others will find useful. This book wasn’t for me, but it could have been with a little more intellectual honesty. Others no doubt won’t be bothered at all.
