Summary

King Boric the Implacable knows death comes to all great warriors. He just didn't expect it to be so damn fickle. Felled by an assassin's blade, he should be spending eternity carousing in the Hall of Avandoor. Instead, his spirit is bound to his decaying body by the enchanted sword of Brakslaagt. And unless he can hunt down the mysterious Lord Brand, who gave him the weapon so long ago, he is cursed to wander the earth forever as an undead wraith. So begins Boric's extraordinary journey across the Six Kingdoms of Dis as a walking corpse who wants nothing more than to be disenchanted and left in peace. His is not an easy quest: along the way he is burned, riddled with arrows, and nearly blown to bits. But when he finally comes face-to-face with Lord Brand, Boric will discover that nothing - in life, in death, or in between - is exactly what it seems.

Great to listen to.

Great narrator, I often find when a male narrator has to do a female voice when the story requires it, that it sounds ridiculous and overdone. But not in this reading.
I enjoyed the lighthearted fantasy aspect of the story too. Not too heavy or any feeling of self importance.
The only fault I have to mention is that the story sometimes jumps in a really strange way. Almost like a cd skipping forward a song.

Warning, do not listen in public

Would you consider the audio edition of Disenchanted to be better than the print version?

Two words Phil Gigante!

What other book might you compare Disenchanted to and why?

Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy meets Lord of the Rings, writing with a Monty Python flare.

Which scene was your favorite?

suicidal sheep

Any additional comments?

This writer is wonderful and so funny!! Having Phil read it was magic, and I couldn't imagine it any other way. He read it with such seriousness and I can't think how someone else could pull it off. Just don't read it in public or while running. The first will get you really weird looks, the latter will make it hard to breath through all the giggling! What a great fun book! I would recomend to any age, any gender. My 15 year old son loved it too!

Entertaining, Not Epic. Funny and Interesting.

This book is good stuff. It's a quest/finding-yourself type fantasy but it it not the long epic kind. Its is the entertaining and interesting kind. The plot was just complex enough to be interesting without that epic fantasy feel that can bog you down sometimes if you are not in the mood for it. The entire book was funny, but it was also surprisingly thought provoking. I had read the book previously and liked it so much I decided to add on the narration and give it a go. A very enjoyable listen. The narrator was great.

Clever Humor

Any additional comments?

Clever at times, always entertaining.

This is a good time-killer novel. I'm not really sure I see the satire in it. It seems it would be better to just say this is a light comedy novel that pokes a bit of fun at high fantasy worlds in general.

I do not regret reading this, as I said, it is a good time-killer, or maybe pallet cleanser.

I recommend this book to anyone that feels like reading, but doesn't want anything too serious.

Dead man walking.

This fantasy is the adventure of King Boris trying to separate his spirit from his body so he can go to heaven. I was expecting the story to be funny and it was mildly amusing at parts but in no way as funny as Christopher Moore whom this book was compared to. Overall the writing is very vivid and I can picture the events that take place very clearly. Unfortunately I'm a character driven reader and I did not like King Boris. Yes he has the typical Middle Ages mentality but I thought he was an Ass, but admittedly a very well written one. The writing itself was good and I liked the adventure behind the man so I finished the book. I purchased this with Whispersync and for a few bucks it wasn't too bad. Phil Gigante was good, I have always enjoyed his voice.

just what I expected!

If you could sum up Disenchanted in three words, what would they be?

Funny. Gratifying. Enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Disenchanted?

"Her voice sounded like a goat with bronchitis." lol

Which character – as performed by Phil Gigante – was your favorite?

The main character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Boric kept getting shot in the back with arrows.

Any additional comments?

Light, easy going story with a good moral to it.

Pleasantly surprised

This book was actually pretty alright, it's not "literature" but if you're looking for a sarcastic fantasy that quite actually might make you laugh out loud at a few points, this will do it.

Ok I laughed Out Loud

Where does Disenchanted rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As far as books that made me laugh, it was up there. "Fool" by Christopher Moore and the "Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper Also several others by Christopher Moore "Lamb" "Blood Sucking Fiends" "You Suck" and "Bite Me" These I've listened to several times each and always made me laugh. I put this one up there and I know I'll listen to several times as when

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters but Boric our main man can not be denied, has some of the best delivery lines in this story. Some came so unexpectedly I found my family just staring at me at times.

Have you listened to any of Phil Gigante’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Phil Gigante is one of my favorite narrators. When I see him as a narrator I always make sure I read as much about the book as possible. I find if you have a great narrator, even if the story is only a 3 1/2 star the narrator can pull it up to at least a 4 to 4 1/2. I think many would agree with me on that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I so wanted to, but finally had to get some sleep......but I did finish in a 36 hour period. :)

Any additional comments?

What I loved about this it was a single book not a series. So many authors are writing series. and by the time you get to the 5 or 6th book the story line is played out. There are a few where that didn't happen but in most cases I feel like it's a run-on sentence. Also many books start out as a trilogy and next thing you know there are 8 books.....WHY? What ever happened to a beginning a middle and an end. Let me just throw something out there "WHEEL OF TIME" I stopped when Mr Jordan died. I hope George R. R. Martin will call it quits in a while. I'm just glad this was a single book. I totally enjoyed all of it. Well worth the price.

Delightful and Fun

Any additional comments?

This was an unexpected delight. I picked it up in one of Audible's "Hidden Gems" sales. Well written and wonderfully read. It started off over the top and I was slightly worried it would continue so, but the author settled into a story which, while lampooning the fantasy genre brilliantly, was a well told and interesting story. I actually cared about the characters. I laughed out loud a few times. I sniffled a little at the end. It's not all suicidal sheep.

Not what I was expecting (in a good way)

If you could sum up Disenchanted in three words, what would they be?

Better than expected.

What other book might you compare Disenchanted to and why?

The books of A Lee Martinez offer the same kind of humorous fantasy settings, always with a twist.

What does Phil Gigante bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Phil is a very good narrator. I have several audiobooks he has read and he always does a good job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to it at work, and pretty much did listen to it in one sitting- or in one day at least.

Any additional comments?

I was going to give this book 3 stars, but then, toward the end, things happened that made me think I was going to give the book a lower rating, but in the very end, things turn around so completely that I had to give the book 4 stars. If you hit a point where you think you want to stop, keep going.
